68S Interior - elephant hide or basket weave

I have been researching interiors for the 1968 911S and found several cars with the elephant hide lower dash trim and door panels, but also seen
a couple of cars with the basket weave from the factory on a 68S. Elephant hide seems to be specific to that model year 1968 production... while basket weave was on the 67S and also maybe the 69 and 70? Given a choice, would you restore a 68S to elephant hide or basket weave? Thanks. Kent

The 68S, and L, had Elephant hide. I do not think the basket weave is correct for a L or S, only the 911 Normal, and the 912.

    Here you go.

This is the lower dash of a 1968 911S in its original condition:

These pictures show the glove box door with the Elephant Hide from a 68 911L and the Basket Weave from a 68 911S, both here in restoration in my shop.
What I would like to know is could the car ordered new in 1968 with the choice of these trim?
Or were they delivered to the dealer whatever they came with?
I have never seen a mention of this option on a COA..

What was the VIN of the 68S w/basketweave? Perhaps it was a very early one and they used leftovers from the 67 model year.

According to the COA it was completed at 05-30-68 so not that early....

Why not use real elephant hide? It's only 40 bucks a square foot.

MY 68 USA 911 Normal/912 would have had aluminum panels, neither Elephant nor basket weave.

Henk does the pattern of your elephant hide glove box door match your '68 door panels? To me it looks like it has less pattern than for instance Milou's dash and there are no signs (holes) that there has been a badge on your glove box door?
