In 1968 both options had been availlable for the 911 S elephant hide and basket weave!
I had owned 4 911 S in the past from 1968! 3 had basket weave one elephant hide and they were all original cars!

Sorry Henk, But that lower Glove box door is not the correct E-Hide. Milou has the correct picture. They are always the same texture/look.

Steve, I looked closely and it is possible that it was redone in the past indeed, so we will use the correct material once we get to it.
Question remains however, how were the cars sold back then? Was a choice presented to the customer in 1968 or were the cars randomly built with BW or EH?
Henk.

I have seen a number of cars with elephant hide and a number of them with basket weave. My car has basket weave and I am VERY sure it's original. How do I know? The door panels have the "production number" in the back in red crayon, that matches the same number in other places of my car.
There are a few of members on this board with 68S cars with basket weave that believe it's original, Claudius I believe has one. There is also another 68S in Italy with $40K original miles with basket weave.
Here are a few 68S with basket weave

'68 911S #0234 has elephant hide and is definitely original.
Could it be that Porsche begun their 68 production using elephant hide and either ran out of it or simply switched to basketweave by popular demand? Mine is n. 009 and was issued with elephant hide.
Mine is #002 1968s and is Elephant Hide too.

I think that makes sense. The bean counters knew that the 69s were going to be completely different so it would be most cost effective to just use up what was on hand, than to have to place a minimum order for a quantity of door panels in excess of that which would be used.

I would love to find original elephant hide door panels in red for my 68S if anybody knows of any available.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.
