Here is what I can come up with

pic 1 - the materials sample book with original swatches as used by Porsche

pic 2 - the headliner swatch

pic 3 - picture of an original 1970 headliner

pic 4 - Autos International headliner installed in a car I own

There are 2 possible variants on the headliner - grain on the vinyl and the perforations. Now Autos does not make the material, they cut it to a pattern and sew it together. The grain does not look very far off if at all off. The perforations are done in a slightly different pattern. Maybe I am just not very good at this Porsche restoration thing but the differences between factory original headliners and reproductions are not bothering me. Of course if someone makes a better headliner for the same price then i will buy.

Great comparison shot. I say the original perfs form a triangle of equal sides, which you can't do with the repops. The other detail that sometimes gets missed is the original headliners for coupes, where the panels are sewn together, the remnants are spread open, one goes forward and the other goes back. So the lump is minimized. Sometimes the bow material is sewn down to far and you can't properly fillet the material out. If Mark Allen 70S is a coupe I would love a shot of that seam where it is tucked under the door weather strip to compare to the last photo of the replacement headliner. Gordon This only applies to non sunroof cars.

So it is the aspect ratio. Actually, if you look at the original material, there is a very clear hexagon formed by the 6 perforations around any single hole. You don't get that with the repros. Just box shapes with 4 nearest neighbours instead of 6. Dead easy to see.

It's a matter of the spacing of the lines on which the holes are punched. The repo has line spacing that is symmetrical in both axis and the original has asymmetrical spacing from one axis to the other. That is what creates the diamond and hexagon effect in the original.

Bingo! Just what I was going to say.
This damn thread is going to make me go down to the garage and stare at my headliner no matter how hard I try to resist!

Got to doing some further searching. Most of what I have found is wrong; I did come across a photo of the Factory Resto of the '73T and from what I can tell, their new headliner may be correct...

Or maybe the original headliner in my 67 is a very old replica, that I thought original :-)

    that is often the case

So one of us needs to buy a headliner from Porsche Classic rather than the resto shops and report back to the group.
