    73 trunk carpet question. Is this patch original?

    My trunk carpet center panel has a patch on it and it's been there ever since I bought the car in 1984. The back side of the carpet there is fine, so there isn't a cut or anything that would have required the patch. The patch sits directly on top of the left side (when looking toward the rear) hinge on the smuggler's box. Could the patch have been a factory thing? I believe the carpet is original; still has the reinforcing board in place and it just overall looks about the right vintage.

    I searched for photos here but didn't see anything similar.
