An excellent set of originals or refinishes is $3000 or so; a good set of 4 that needs refinish is about $1500. Why on earth would someone use a grinder on them?
Who knows why people do what they do . How often do we se items that someone thinks they are doing the right thing only to be damaging the item

Are you sure they're 5.5's & not deep sixes ?
5.5's were only fitted to '68 MY cars so a date code os 7/'70 is surprising ...

I have a nos set dated in the 70's & have seen others the same!
Of course they still made 5 X 5 1/2 fuchs after 1968. They kept producing replacement parts for their earlier cars. If a customer bought a 1968 Porsche new, and 2 years later wanted 5 1/2 or even Deep 6 fuchs, the dealers and factory had to have them available....

I have seen 5.5s dated in 71. There may have been a run for the 914-6s but I have not been able to verify. More likely, as Curt said, they were replacement parts. I do know that the 4.5 part number was superceeded to the 5.5 number. Eventually, they were superceeded to the early 6X15.. then to the flat 6. They were supposed to make replacement parts for 10 years, but there was some room for interpretation in supercessions.
