    Dolly/rack for Targa???

I am looking for some help to build a dolly/restoration rack for my Targa. I have looked at "the Rack" from Gary Emory

    http://www.emorymotorsports.com/the-rack

and the "Octiserrie" by John Forcier

    http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...otisserie.html

What I am looking to do is remove all the suspension and underbody components to strip and re-undercoat the bottom of the car. The engine and gearbox will be removed. Being a Targa I would like some advise as to how concerned I should be about the extra flex of the Targa body. Ideally I would like to be able to tranport the car mounted to the "dolly" to the paint shop as well. Does anybody have any designs that they would be willing to share or comments after using "the Rack" or "Octiserrie".

    Thank you for your help

    Hi Rodger

The original Emory rack and my "octisserie" (which has its origin in the Emory idea), both pick up on the suspension hard-points. They are where the weight of the car is transfered to the suspension and are very solid if in good condition. To my mind there would be no reason why a targa would be different to a coupe when supported this way - and as you can see in my thread, the whole car can be toppled about as needed. To be totally happy, particularly if you're removing your doors during transport, you could weld support beams (1"x1" box) between the targa arch and the windscreen A pillar. They would be cut out just prior to paint.

As I understand it, targas are at their most vulnerable when you're removing floors and sills (which is where the strength is). If you're not cutting into the car anywhere you're going to be fine.

    Cheers

One word of advise. Depending on how long the car is in the dolly and how much rust repair you do, you should really consider cross bracing the doors and jambs horizontally and vertically. Remove metal in incremental stages to preserve strengh. If you doors fit great before the new floors, etc.. You want it to be so after. I've also been told a coupe or targa will sag if only supported from the front bumper mounts and rear engine mounts.

    Got wood?
Pretty down and dirty, supported at the front cross member mount and rear torsion tube.

Don't even consider putting any car on a rotisserie until it's all tied together.
