Did they use aluminum cases in the early part of '68 and then switch to magnesium? I have a '68 SWT with an aluminum case that I have always assumed came from a '67 model. GLWS!

Yes they did use alloy cases on some early 68 911 engines, I had a 68T that had an original alloy case - everything else on the 68T motor was junk 2.0L T parts with a measly 110hp but the engine block was aluminum. Before that I had a 68 911S targa that came to me and I thought the mag case was wrong at first until the COA came and proved matching numbers.

1968 was a transition year from sand case aluminum cases into mag cases, it is possible to see both.

The alloy 2.0 cases are amazing. I had the original engine in my '67 Sports Purpose and built it out to 2.7 specs. I think it produced a tad more than 110hp - that car was quick.

Just like always - use what's on the shelf until it runs out. I love that about the old Porsche - they didn't waste anything. One of my favorites was the use of covers from obsolete electric meters to close the mirror access holes in 356's.

P.S. Have we sufficiently hijacked this thread? Was there an engine for sale here or something?

Hijack continuation: My 68 is also equipped with 67 window cranks and has no head rests on the seats.
