What is this engine, number 4080900AI?

    Dear all,
According to the redbook, 4080900 is 1968 S engine.
The number on this magnesium case has 2 more letters at the end.
I think they are AI or could be A1.
Could this be the engine came with sporto?
    Thanks for your help.

It's most likely AT AuschTausch. Factory replacement / rebuild engine, most often under warranty.

Interesting that it has a pull type clutch installed and a 915 gearbox nearby. And what is with those heat exchangers? The tops are just lopped off and capped.

They probably didn't need heating in Bangkok?

This a great tidbit of Porsche history. I had never read this before.
