    Weird Serial number

    Dear all,

I am chasing a 911 L or T 1968, and you have tons of in the US. However I found one with a bizarre serial number : 11805323. I have checked again and again my files, books and the net with no joy. It just can't match to any.

Either I have found a very special one with lot of value, kind of prototype, I am the first to be served ;-) OR this is a fake one.

    Cheers

My guess is there is a number missing. A 118 "2" 5323 would be a T. A 11805XXXX would be an L coupe. Don't know how many T's were built, but my guess is it is an L. Any pictures of the number?

In the Tech Spec book (mine is the German version printed 6.68) it says that the range starting with serial 11805001 is for the coupé 911 L USA.
It is mentioned the engine is equipped with "Abgasentgiftung" which directly translated would be something like "exhaust detoxification"... Engine number 901/14, or 901/17 with Sportomatic.

    >> "exhaust detoxification" <<

That would be the air pump. A crude (and power-robbing) attempt at smog control by pumping fresh air into the exhaust ports.

That number is not "bizzare" ar all. It is a chassis number to a 68 911L Coupe. Yes, those cars came with a Smog pump driven by a pulley attached to the left hand cam. Most, if not all of those have been stripped of thier smog equipment. The smog pump is a Saginaw smog pump used in 67 Chevrolets.

That's it! You've found it. Like every other early Porsche on this board, yours is uber-rare, one-of-none, and of course, priceless. It's been told that young Ferry Porsche suffered occassionally from mild asthma, and this car was custom made with an exotic, one-of-a-kind cabin air freshening system. It's the Holy Grail!! Congrats!!

O.K., pleae pardon my exhuberant sarcasm. So many people try and 'will' their car into something special before they have gathered all the facts.

The sad thing is you did not catch I was ironic. In a group or in a village, there is always someone like you having the same behaviour as yours. I am ok now, I know who it is.

However, in the files I have, the series starting by 11805xxx was missing, this is why I ask other knowledgeable people.

Thanks to all for your kind responses.
