    Next-to-last ( for 2012 ) Canepa Cars & Coffee

Spent Saturday morning visiting Canepa's for their penultimate Cars & Coffee of the 2012 season. Canepa's last C & C of '12 will be, as it has been every other month so far, on the second Saturday of October, but that weekend I will be at Sears Point catching this season's last CSRG meeting.

It was the usual perfect weather, expertly made cappuccino and fresh Danish were on hand, all the right people were there, but being Canepa's, the cars are the real stars and the chief reason to visit.

As with previous Canepa C & Cs, the attendees constitute an eclectic lot, with classic Rods, customs, R Gruppe & Early S Reg-type cars and exotics all represented. In the showroom an absolutely immaculate '73 Porsche ( Series III ) Tangerine RS ( Ser.# 01170 ), originally sold into Austria, with all matching number components, highest quality, bare metal restoration by Nate Cantwell, with the power-train being completely rebuilt to new specs by Scott's Independent...........the eye-watering price being asked certainly reflects the quality of this car.

Another notable car on the showroom floor is a '97 993 Porsche Turbo, advertised as One-of-One, with 9140 original miles on the clock, including CofA indicating the car was returned to the factory in 2004, with a Sonderwunsch technician installing a Turbo S motor with larger turbos, upgraded control unit, additional oil cooling and custom made exhaust for a net increase of 42 HP to a new total of 444 HP. The Arctic Silver Metallic car sports a custom-tailored, Boxster-Red fully leather interior, countless options and custom touches and is as close to Zuffenhausen delivery-center new as it looks.

My personal highlight of the trip was tripping over a perfectly reconditioned '61 M-B 300SL Roadster chassis with the bare metal body on a dolly, waiting to be re-united after painting. For now, (last photo of this post ) a teaser shot of the two piece, steel center / alloy rim Rudge knock-off wheel mounted on the chassis. When I get done organizing and processing the shots of this rare jewel I will post it all under a separate thread in "Other Cars" for those interested,.............while studying the bare chassis and suspension I felt it was tantamount to reading a thesis on automotive Engineering.

I will miss these monthly get-togethers and hope that Bruce will continue this delightful practice next year.

    ........and more.

From neat & practical to absurd

A San Francisco based ESReg member's tangerine RS which he drove to Canepa's

How long has it been since you've seen a Strudelbaker

a rare 356 GT for sale @ Canepa's, everything about is identical to the 4-cam Carreras, except they had pushrod engines - during the years these were offered in the early '60s, very few, maybe 6 to ten or so a year of these were manufactured & offered for sale by Porsche

There was no one around to answer questions, but I vaguely recall reading in the first edition of Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance" book about a client's wild 911 Cabrio with DP bodywork and a turbo 962 motor housebroken for the street by Jerry Woods. This may be that car, but if he's reading this, perhaps "Nine 17 David" would be good enough to take the time to answer your inquiry as he is so much closer to Canepa's in Scotts Vally than I am, both geographically and relation-ship wise.

Thanks for posting John! I'd never been to Canepa before. After your great photos and descriptions from last month there was no way I was going to miss this one, and it didn't disappoint. There was such an amazing mix of cars, inside Canepa and in the lot, that the presence of 4 RS's (at least one a real lightweight) seemed almost commonplace.

i drove a great loop from San Francisco to Canepa and back. I came down 1 on the coast early in the morning, then drove back north on 35 (aka Skyline Drive). The stretch of 35 from 17 to the intersection of 9 is, um, interesting...

Oh, and agree with you on RS 1170, but they definitely need to replace that repro hood crest!

This is indeed that car -- not a Cabrio, but a Speedster. Built by BC in 1989 for a well-known Las Vegas businessman (and used sparingly since), with a pukka 962 motor re-packaged by Jerry Woods to fit in a dp-Design tail. Chassis is braced by a tubular structure, but BC chose to use torsion-bars rather than coil-overs to keep the car street-worthy. It even has A/C and a gas-fired heater! Last I heard, one of two Scottish racing brothers with celebrity wives was considering purchase. Over-the-top, to be sure -- but I love it!

I sold mine in 2007. That looks like a '62 GT Hawk; nice enough but the '63-64s could be had with supercharged 289s. Funny thing is I've been back to a couple of my old Studebaker Drivers Club chapter's get-togethers since, but except for those I haven't seen one on the road since.
