How is it driving the 964? Thinking of changing my BMW 850CSI for one.

Hi there. I know the Porsche I am looking at is not a vintage one like this forum is about, but somehow I got here and just felt like at home.
I have been restoring the e31 for the last 5 years, but it isnt sporty enough. I still have this spark inside of me
I am thinking about getting into the Porsche game and the 964 has been a dream for a long time.
Tell me your experience and so on.
I will be going for a turbo look or a turbo.
It would also be nice if you could give me info about some 964 forums.
The one I am looking at is a 1986 (930) Porsche Turbo.
I would just like the hear your opinion. I know the 964 and the BMW are totally different, but the P is more of a sports car.

    Welcome to the forum.

I owned a '91 964 for about 5 years. It wasn't a daily driver but used whenever I had an opportunity......roughly 5K miles per year. It was a great GT car.....my wife loved to use it to run around town in. The 964's have been on the rise the last couple of years and good ones are getting harder to find. The only advise I would give you would be to get a proper PPI done from a reputable shop and to be patient and wait for right car to come along....one with documented service history. Look and drive several before you make the final decision.

Excellent low mileage examples of the 964's are being bought up by dealers....there are several (9) for sale at a local dealer outside of Philadelphia by Tim Holt. He has two 964's for sale with the wide body that fits your description....a turbo and non-turbo. Check out his website. Tim's a straight shooter I saw him yesterday at the Radnor Hunt Concours d'Elegance and he was driving a beautiful silver '94 C4 964 wide body with 30K miles. Tim's cars are not cheap....but you get what you pay for.

    Good Luck!

    David,

The folks I would recommend for a PPI would be....

Bill Dougherty in West Chester, PA: doughertyautomotive.com
Mark Burkit in Allentown, PA: specialtycarsservicecenter.com
Jay Winsor in Bryn Mawr, PA: jandjmotors.com
Don Galbraith in Devon, PA: dgmotoring.com

I'm sure Tim Holt knows all of these shops.....years ago he use to have his cars serviced/repaired at Galbraith's

    Good Luck!

Jeff - many thanks. I am sniffing around for something so it's nice to have some homework done before I make any moves.

The only I don't like on his website is that prices aren't posted. If I see something I want but the price is way out of my range, why bother wasting my time and his is the point. Not saying anything wrong with Tim's cars, but I see Autokennel who posts prices, and I am more included to call Paul if it's in my price range.

Prior to this year, I might call someone with a 911S, now it's why bother? Way past my price range so it saves everyone time.

Thanks again and I have book marked your response.

For what it's worth I spoke with Tim about the two 964 coupes he has - C2 slate gray, 40,000 miles $42.5K, C4 blue, 46,000 miles $42K.

I was mildly deflated since I could have gone for either car. For some reason I thought they may be mid $30's.

Those numbers seem high but it depends on what you are after. IMHO, if you are after just a car, (albeit a Porsche) then yes those seem high to me. OTH, if you want a long term keeper with documentation of records, books, window sticker and so on, those have value to me.

With my 1972 T, I have some original paperwork from April 1972 which I think is really nice to have. I also have an old MV with original paperwork from the original sale in NY, the sale to Hong Kong, then to the UK and back to the US. For me, that paperwork trail has value and is worth $$$$'s above the blue book price.

If Tim is including that with his cars, that has interest for me too. I guess my problem is I am an amateur history buff so having the paperwork is collecting history too.

I have also been thinking about just keep the 8, save up and buy one in the following 3 years. I am still young. What do you guys think?
Will they be that hard to get in the following 5 years. I am 24 now. The e31 looks like this now.
