I am constantly amazed by the workings of our Universe; how a series of seemingly unrelated events and circumstances spread out over a number of years suddenly converge to reveal a larger, more grand relationship than could have been imagined. And here I am, an unwitting participant, left to wonder was I just in the right place at the right time, or, is there something funny going on here?
Let's rewind the tape back to 2005 ... I'm thinking of selling my 914/6 conversion that I built in high school to fund a 911 project. One day, as I'm pulling into the shop parking lot I see a "new" 911 heap of a car sitting in the parking lot. I ask my dad what the story is with it and he says, "Call Jeff. It's his junk." A few days and a few phone calls later and I have my first 911 ... VIN 9110101060 ... also known as The Blue Dog. I ended up selling the car, but not before it convinced me that my favorite of the early 911s were the ones that were built in 1970. I also never forgot the VIN.
Fast forward to August 2010 ... Longranger shows up at John Espositio's place across the driveway with his 1970 911S. The car is in for a repaint, and afterward the car comes over to our place for a little mechanical touch and go. Little did I know at the time, however, that this 1970S was actually VIN 9110301059 and was the car built on the assembly line directly in front of The Blue Dog some 40 years prior. Since I sold my car in 2008 and didn't meet 1059 until 2010, it took a little while for it to dawn on me that these two cars, separated at birth 4 decades prior, had both managed to find their way to North Hollywood, California. Across continents, through numerous peoples' hands, they both managed to find me ...
The last stop on this timeline is last night. I was sitting on my couch surfing through my email and there was an email in there from Bill at California Classix. Now, I've known Bill for something like 20 years as he used to be our neighbor here at the shop. He's a good friend and a good business man, and from time to time he'll get a really good car that he'll send to me in the hope that I can help him find it a good home. Well, last night he sent me this ... http://www.californiaclassix.com/garage/c747.html ... I damn near fell off my couch. The Universe had done it to me again ... the 1970 911 that was built on the assembly line directly after The Blue Dog was sitting in my friend's warehouse in Ventura, CA about 50 miles away ... VIN 9110101061.
Am I destined to be the meat in the 1970 911 sandwich? Does the Universe think I made a good decision when I chose a 1970 911 as my first and favorite of the early 911s? What does it all mean?
Of course, nobody really knows for sure what it means, but I definitely think it's a serendipitous series of events.
