Foglights and other electrical gremlins - 73.5 911

    Hi All

The 73.5 911 is coming back to life:)
My wife and I had it on the freeway this weekend and it was really smooth at 60 in 4th. I believe the shift linkage needs adjusting - shifting into 5th the rpms jumped to where I think it was in 3rd gear?
    Appreciate comments on that issue.

I'm currently working through a few electrical issues with a 73.5 911 that I'd appreciate your thoughts on.

I've had the alternator rebuilt and replaced the VR with a solid state version.
This cured alt light on always initially. This morning however, I noticed that the alt light glowed weakly at idle - this is the first time I have seen this since replacing the alternator/VR??

    Foglights:
Engaging the FL switch I don't get lights or the red indicator on the switch to light.
If I jump power from fuse 1 directly to the FL fuse (8 I think) I get lights on - so bulbs are good.
The FL relay appears to be OK: I swapped it for the horn relay and the horn works.

    Turn signals/fuel gauge:
With turn signals on, the fuel gauge bounces in sync (sometimes).

    Ignition switch:
I have to have the key in just the right position to energize the starter.
Does this indicate the key is worn, or the switch is going south?

    Appreciate suggestions.

    Charles

Your headlight have to be on for the fogs to come on. You probably need a new ignition switch.
Make sure all your grounds are clean and in good condition.
I've heard that the radio suppression condenser may cause the alt light to come on with solid state conversions. I have no direct experience with this.
check the shifter coupling under the panel behind your seats. This is probably worn and should be rebushed then realigned.
Sorry for the order of the answers.

Shifter - readjust. If still a problem replace coupler bushings and maybe the round bushing in the tunnel and cup at shifter.

Alternator - ok in my experience if the light glows dimly at low idle. If it glows brightly or stays on >1500 rpm then there is a problem.

Fuel gage - ground problem - clean all the grounds behind the instruments

Use a voltmeter hooked up at the battery to check your charging rate both at idle and 2,000 RPM. If too low at idle the turn signals may flicker because of the voltage draw. The fog lights only work with the LOW beams on. AS already mentioned, grounds can also be the culprit, hopefully you attached the ground strap to the back of the alternator when you installed it, also check the ground strap from the transmission to the bulkhead. Are you familiar with the shift adjustment procedure?

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
I'll check grounds and look into adjustments for the shifter.

    thanks!

    Hi All

Another gremlin has risen to the top of the list.
The car has had cold-start issues since I first got it running, but once it warms up it runs smooth, and starts instantly when hot.
This weekend I could not get it to start and idle. It fires, runs very rough and dies. Sunday it would not start at all.

I have not yet replaced the ignitiion switch.

    I suspect the cold-start circuit?
The car has MFI with a cold start solenoid atop the fuel filter.

Ideas on trouble shooting this issue?

    Thanks

    Charles
