Gunnar Jeannette in the Nissan DeltaWing - Attacked in Atlanta

Our good friend and long-time Porsche racer, Gunnar Jeannette (son of Kevin "gumby1953") got taken out by a GTC Porsche during practice this afternoon for the Petite LeMans at Road Atlanta. He is fine after this spectacular flip. Below is a link to in-car YouTube video.

My suspicion is that the low, narrow nose is difficult to see in traffic. Both the accident at Le Mans and this incident at Road Atlanta involved cars moving over on the Delta Wing and hitting it with their rear quarters. Most modern race cars and their driver-safety and neck-support systems leave very poor vision to the rear quarter. It's got to be difficult to judge the location of the Delta Wing's pointy nose during overtaking by either car. I'm glad that it's being reported on the ALMS site that Gunnar's OK and that they are going to get the car running.

+1 to this. Watching the video, that's exactly what happened. Even if you can see it when being passed by it, I think you see the side of the fuselage starting to move past and you instinctively assume you have the room between you and what you see and forget that the rear wheel pods are there...

That might be true if they were both GT cars. They are not.

    S_ _ _ Happens!

    Both Drivers are OK!

Gunnar's helmet never made contact with the ground.

The Porsche had an in-car cam too....it appears he had just lost control going over the rumble strips...the rest is history. Nobody needs to blame anybody, its always "just racing"! There is a set of sequence photos too....you should get a better idea how great the Deltawing protected its Driver.

Revolutionary or conventional time will tell!

Watching that video several times over, one would swear his helmet met the ground. Crazy. I do imagine he has a sore neck today though.

"Just racing" is right. Every time you go out you have to concede that anything can happen.
