What does a '65 toolkit look like?

    Hi.
The toolkit pictured came with my ex-'65 911. It has a vinyl ribbed cover. My research suggests that vinyl ribbed covers are correct for MY '66-'68. I haven't seen reference of it to MY '65. Can anyone confirm if ribbed covers came with '65 911s? Thanking you in advance.

Wow, that sucker looks correct and nearly complete. You are missing one of the Klein screwdrivers. The open wrenches should say "drop forged steel" on them. Pliers look right. Closed wrench should say "Chrom-Vanadium", IIRC. The Messko tire gauge looks present (hidden by pouch). I don't see the fuse packets that came with the tools.

I'm likely brain farting a few details.

Are there any photos out there of: "ribbed" vinyl and the "fabric like texture" vinyl?

Thanks for reminding me about the flatblade screwdriver, Kenikh. I left it in my '66 when I was working on the carb last week.

Mid 65 through 66 is ribbed vinyl.
Changeover occurred in 1966 to a "fabric like texture" vinyl (kind of like a pinpoint oxford shirt material texture), continued through 1967.
67 was the textured material like vinyl, note that I've seen (and own) some of these bags with red interior
68 was PREDOMINANTLY a smooth vinyl with a putty color interior, with a few bags showing up that were in elephant type material and I've seen some of these elephant vinyl material in a coupe of 69s. Note that these is very very few of these elephant type material bags around suggesting it was only used for a very limited time.
69 was PREDOMINANTLY a smooth vinyl with a "tan" colored interior (not putty color).
70 to mid 73 was the basketweave with clasps.
Two bags were offered from mid 73 to end of the year... one string tie, and one snap type bag.

This is from decades of research and hundreds of bags and cars looked at, and plenty of toolkits owned (and still owned).

Are there exceptions? Of course... but if you aren't the original owner .....

    regards,
    E
Thanks, Eric, for the comprehensive and valuable information on the toolkit covers.

John, black is a hard color to get the details right on pictures, but here is a close up of my ribbed vinyl '65 toolkit cover.

    Thanks Andy!

Does anyone have a photo of the "Fabric like" vinyl for comparison?

    Linen Tool Bag

John lets ask Eric if this the the linen pattern he spoke of?

Is this also the tan (rather than the putty) color?

Since we are talking about 65 tool kits, can Eric or Allen (DR911E) speak to the 2 different size (allen wrench) spark plug tools?

    Thanks Bob,

I need to take some kits to the LA Meet this next year and have Eric look at them.
