You just lost the threaded pin that secures the coupler to the shift shaft on your trans. Now is a good time to replace the coupler bushings while you are putting it back together. Check to see that the threads in the coupler have not been stripped. I can send you a rebuilt coupler with the retaining pin, if you like.

    Regards

Inner and outer rubber boot? Isn't there a detent in the shaft for the tapered safety wire bolt?

You dont seem to have the countersunk locating hole in the selecter shaft?

Richard, there's no hole in the shift shaft for the conical screw! How in the world did that happen? Well, it's easy enough to drill one.

The rust on the shaft will bugger the seal. If you can, polish the whole shaft before final assembly. Even some emery paper looped over the shaft from below and run back and forth would probably help.

I've seen the "detent" hole for the locating screw pin enlarged, but never absent. Fairly sure your transmission is not upside down, so... ?

Indeed the hockey stick is upside down...!!!! the hole is at the bottom??? how is this possible?? can it work that way? I havent tried yet, this car has been sitting this way for a while. I thought for a sec that the trans was maybe upside down
I was getting ready to drop this engine and trans when I noticed this. Weird now I wonder if it can still shift this way, I think I'll try and see before I remove it...just boggles the mind what one finds.
Did 356 trans have a detente hole from the beginning or was there another way they were secured??

Is it a 356? Just cant think of anyway the shift rod could turn 180 degrees in a 901/911 or a 915.

I had an upside down shaft on a 901 before. No big deal, just flip the coupler and test your dexterity installing the screw upside down.
