    Moon Rockets & 917s

Some heady times back then. About the same time on Sunday afternoon that Pedro Rodriguez' (and Jackie Oliver) 917 was crossing the finish line at the 1971 Daytona 24 Hour, just 70 miles away Apollo 14 was blasting off for the moon! I'm sure the launch could have been seen and heard from the track.

Yeah, me too The race ended at 3PM and the rocket launched at 4PM ... just enough time to hop in the 911 and drive the 70 miles to the Cape.

Oh man, that would have been a grand afternoon for those spectators.

Never thought about those two events overlapping, cool. NASA had a lot riding on this mission, especially following the near catastrophe of Apollo 13.

Oh, that's the year John Buffum was driving the 914/6 GT for Ralph Meaney. If he's at LSPR in 2 weeks, I'm going to ask him if he remembers the moon shot that day.
