    Sandy in Lower Manhattan

Some people have called and asked how things are here and since we just got back electricity yesterday I thought I would do a short pictorial. The Porsche content is that since my regular car, an Audi, was on a lift the 911 was the only car I could drive. Even though it did have a full tank of gas, we decided to stick it out in our neighborhood in NYC called Soho. Reading by candle light and hunting and gathering during the day for food, as there were no stores, there were a handfull of restaurants that after a couple of days started grilling meat on the sidewalks but for the most part we ate fondue and guacamole. Many people lost everything and many people are still without power, we were lucky as we lost only weight. I apologize if people have seen these photos as we didn't have internet or phone it was all new to us.

I live in the dark part.

The next photo is my block

This is the subway station about 7 blocks from me.

This the Holland Tunnel, whose entrance is 5 blocks from my house. It goes from NYC to Hoboken, NJ and is about a mile long.

The next photo is about three blocks from my house and a low area in the neighborhood.

The bottom photo was what the Hudson River looked like when I walked over to it at 6pm, Monday night of the storm. It was gusting winds but very light rain.

A half hour after I walked in my door at 6:30 the river had over flowed it's banks and moved in about a 1/2 mile into the city doing this:

First photo is the subway at the Battery.

Second photo is the World Trade center site.

Third photo is a parking garage in Tribeca, the neighborhood below mine.

500 million gallons of water flowed in to Lower Manhattan and it looked like this the next day:

    All done by this.

And we were the lucky ones as I said. My best to everyone. I hope all the S folks in Long Island, NJ and Staten Island are coping well.

    Best,

    Yale

I did end up driving the 911 around Manhattan on one day as Con Ed was giving out dry ice and we had a freezer full of pasta sauce we had made from 50 pounds of fresh tomatoes which we were desperatly trying to keep frozen. Very strange driving with no traffic signals and on the way home after dark it was quite spooky with police on the corners directing traffic and standing behind road flairs. On the streets were large military trucks and utility trucks from Georgia, Alabama, Ohio etc helping out.

Uptown of course all was normal, with the neighborhoods next to the dark downtown areas flooded with folks buying any food they could find and trying to charge their devices.

Crazy stuff. I live out on the barrier beach and we were clobbered though not as bad as Jersey. I flew over Wednesday morning. See my pictures http://www.FireIsland.com I hope all here made it through with little or no loss.

There are some folks making a shirt that refers to the darkened area as SoPo (South of Power). Inside joke. New Yorkers are tough cookies. Glad you're doing well.

There were some cool stories of folks with power putting an extension cord under their door so people without could come by and charge their cellphones.

Glad to hear you made through fine, Yale.

Those photos quite Incredible. Shows how unprepared we are.
Makes me relive my experiences with city : 9/11, blackout, Iren, Halloween snow storm, Sandy.....

I haven't seen much how much damage Sandy dis, still no power, gas or fuel in NJ.

Thanks ,tough, for very limited ,but improving cell service. Still here. Still hanging.

    Good luck to all.

Few photos from my block :

    ....picking parking spot is crucial.
    ....fuel line.
....only way to get onto my street.
....week later I am still wondering "what first ? Tree removers, or tree falls on my house ?"
    .....pork chops on coals.

Pork chops on coals! Nice, where did you get the chops from? We went to Chinatown today to get chicken to make stock. Everything was very fresh, fish, meat, etc since they had to throw everything old out.
