Technique for cleaning Stainless Targa Bar

I'm doing a major restore on my 68 Targa. I've removed the Targa bar for painting. While it off, I want to clean/buff it. Any suggestions as to the proper way to restore the stainless Targa bar to factory new condition?

    Thanks

I thought I'd give this thread a bump as I'm in a similar boat.

I'm wondering what lies beneath the black (hopefully paint) on a 73 Targa I just picked up.

73 should be stainless. Steel wool cleans it up nicely, no circular moves. If it is off use paint remover or have it dipped.
