Size speakers in footwell map pockets?

I have an Alpine unit to replace my Sony 80's craptastic broken deck. There are two bad speakers in the dash tha need replacing, and I wanted to get two speakers mounted in the map pockets in the footwell. Anyone tried this? Anyone know the sizes you can fit down there?

On the SWB cars there is plenty of room to mount speakers in the footwells. As I recall you can get 6" in there. I mounted a 1/4" plywood backing for the actual speaker mounting. They are out of the way and work well.

The idea is to mount the speaker behind the map pocket to the kick panel installed board.

Years ago I did this with the '65. I wasn't that pleased with the bass. Of course speaker technology has certainly improved over the years-heavier & specialized magnets, cone materials etc.

    I've fascinated with these:

    UNDERCOVER Speaker Enclosures
Custom Autosound designed and manufactured these speakers specifically for 'under seat' or horizontal 'wall' installations. 'Could be used on large 'parcel shelves' - wherever! Compact unit with one 5½" woofer and piezo tweeter in each enclosure. Under seat fit for most pre '78 cars and trucks. 120 watt capacity! If you've got the space we have the solution! Each enclosure measures 3" high X 8-1/4" wide X 11-1/4" long. Sold in pairs
    Undercover1 $119.95

Having a fairly large enclosed speaker system all under the front seats is appealing. Yes the highs would be somewhat muted but with a high-output radio head, could be a great, clean and stealth solution. The exact fit has yet to be verified.

I like that idea - clean and hidden, like I was looking for.

Those Undercover ones would work well under the seats of my 71 Suburban. Thanks!
