This amazing time capsule of German engineering is literally one of a kind. According to respected sources, only 6 long wheel base 911S soft window targas were ever built. And only one of them was finished in Tangerine. The original US owner specifically wanted a soft window 911S targa and it took until 1970 when a Monterey dealership found this car. Originally sold in Germany, then imported to the California coast. In addition to being a one of a kind rarity, this 911 has been preserved in its original livery.
The original US owner, being a pilot, drove this car very sparingly between his home and the aircraft hanger, where it was parked most of the time. According to the original owner, the mileage was correct when he sold it to me. The paint was re-done to a very high standard in the original (and desireable) color of Tangerine. I would rate the paint a strong 9.5/10 showing factory depth and clarity. Apart from the paint this car is factory original. The folding targa top is original and in amazing condition along with the roof section and tonneau cover. The factory tool-kit is seemingly unused and original. The interior is completely original and nearly flawless including both front seats, both rear seats, door panels, rubber seals, the original velour carpet, 400mm steering wheel, glove box interior, and the original dash. Even the factory horse-hair sound insulation is still intact and in very nice condition. The rear seats appear as though they have never been sat in. All five date matched (10.68 ) deep 6 Fuchs are in beautiful condition and wearing period correct Vredestein 185R15 tires. The car has never seen rain, snow, or even an outdoor parking space. There is absolutely no rust and there never has been. The floors are completely original along with both longitudinals, both battery boxes, shock towers, and door bottoms. Most importantly this 911 has never seen an accident or even a door ding. All panels close like new, and all locks are smooth as silk with the original ‘Huf’ keys. This car re-defines the quality expected from a factory original car. These beautiful machines are truly only original once and no level of restoration can achieve what we have here.
Mechanically this 911 is extremely solid and absolutely exhilarating to drive. The engine is very strong throughout the power curve with no flat spots. A recent inspections shows nearly 170 compression across the board. The transmission is very smooth through all 5 gears. At some point prior to 1970, this car received a new factory drivetrain for unknown reasons. The engine number deviates 23 digits from the COA and the Transmission number deviates 25 digits. Otherwise all other numbers match. The original ‘S’ gages function properly along with the entirety of the electrical system. The original Marchal headlamps add a nice touch to the North American headlight system. Taillights, brake lights, and turn indicators are all fully functioning. The MFI has recently been rebuilt and is performing beautifully. The exhaust is new (and correct) along with both heat exchangers. The Bilstein suspension is new, both batteries are new and the engine has recently been tuned. In addition, any detail that needed to be taken care of was attended to. Overall, driving this car is an amazing experience and truly unique. A recent inspection by Canepa Design in Scotts Valley, CA has further solidified the pedigree of this car. Their inspection revealed nothing more than would be expected from a beautifully preserved original car. No rust was found. No evidence of bodywork was found. And every system was found to be functioning properly with the exception of a few very minor details that have been attended to.
