Thread: Sun Roof Delete

    Sun Roof Delete

We have just added some new parts to our 'Sun Roof Delete' Kit.

We have made a panel for deleting the sun roof in 911 Bodyshells for a few years now.

The panel is wheeled so that the curvature in both planes is correct to the original roof line when welded in place and means that minimal filler is needed.

We spot weld in the panel, which causes a small amount of shrinkage - the panel is very precisely wheeled with less curve than the roof and the shrinkage both increases the curvature and tensions the skin so the panel doesn't flap.

We developed this part because roof skins are becoming harder to find as less cars are being cut up and the price of a new skin form Porsche is very high.

Unrolling the seams on the roof and putting it all back correctly is also quite invasive and costly.

The results have been quite good.

We have recently realised (Doh!) that when the Sun Roof has been removed fittting a headliner can be quite tricky.

On Race and Rally cars we normally glue Perlon into the roof, it looks reasonable and protects crash helmets.

If you want a headliner it is more difficult as there are no 'installation rods' in the non-sunroof car.

Rods are available from Porsche but they are relatively expensive.

We have now started making the rods in 4mm dia Stainless Steel complete with endcaps and we make headliner kits with an icorrect pattern vinyl in either Black or Off White (see later posts) . We also add the black vinyl for screen pillars and B Posts.

It all ships in the same box.

Not 'correct' for concours restoration of valuable cars but good for back dates or racers.

The flange, which is one panel thickness, fits up from the underside so when spot welded into place the panel if flush with the roof skin.

    Chris,

It all looks beautiful, but that is not the correct hole pattern.

    see http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...l=1#post593537

If you pick a hole and look at the nearest neighbours, all the repros have a square or diamond pattern (depending on your perspective). The original has a hexagon pattern. If you reproduce that, there are a lot of us who would spend good money to get the right pattern. I'll be needing one in 4 months.

    Yours cynically ;-)

Yep, too square - we matched it to a headliner we bought from Germany - so back to the drawing board.

I am grateful for the comments and have amended the first post.

I have access to an old roof that i can cut up, however i would be interested in seeing an alternative to cutting up a roof.

    $225.00+ $85.00 Shipping with UPS

If you cut a section out of an old roof you will either need to step the edge or butt weld it into place.

If you change the entire skin you will need to roll the drain gutters open and then re-crimp.

These panels have proven very popular over the 10 years we have made them.

Here is one of your Sunroof Delete panels in action. This one was "bonded" to the roof, not welded. It came out beautiful! Saved a bunch of weight, too.
