    Engine overhaul-960029

Beginning engine rebuild and have discovered original (first edition) chain tensioners and aluminum chain ramps. That and the excellent condition of the motor leads me to speculate that this may have never previously been opened. What are some other 'clues' I may look for? (It does have the aluminum 'expandable' oil return tubes) which don't necessarily indicate complete teardown. Thanks.

See if the back of the bearing shells have the Porsche logo and part number. Usually a rebuild will have aftermarket supplied bearings.

Alas, apparently somebody agreed with you as I found .025 undersize bearings. The fasteners are correctly marked. Thanks.

Brian, while you have the engine apart could you provide some photos and other details of this very early 901/02 engine.
Two things are important right now, the date codes form each half on the pulley end, and the casting #'s under the oil tubes. 901.101.101.01 changed to 101.02 about this time while 901.101.102.01 remained the same. I do not know if it is a coincidence with the new 901/02 engine or a change was required in some way. It would be ideal to document the actual differences in the case half. See thread:

Also the pairing # would be useful.

Attached are the numbers from the case: 960029, and 5316. Also, the oil pump is 5348. Where are date codes?Name: 911case2.jpg

    Other case number:

could not find anything on left side case. maybe because the left case half casting number is 901.101.101.02, and the right half is 901.101.102.01. Name: 911case1.jpg

Yes. Case done. Heads done. Awaiting p&c's...
BTW, this is not the original engine for my car.
    Is it yours?
