    Help with 1967 911 S details...(WTB radio)

Last of the missing bits from our 1967 911s restoration...a Becker Mexico. According to the COA our car came with a Mexico but I dont know what type. Specifically, did these cars have the same style Beckers as MBs or where they always installed with the knobs and controls behind the dash faceplate.

Louie, I can not answer your question with regard to the faceplates, but I have seen a Mexico TR that has the faceplate comes through the dash like the Blaupunkt Frankfurt does as opposed to the din mount like the pinstripes. And I would venture to say that Porsche did not put a pinstripe faceplate on at the factory, although the dealer had access to the pinstripes through the aftermarket sales.

I might can share what I learned about the integrated cassettes. The first integrated unit was the Becker Mexico Olympia which dated from 1968 with stereo cassette. So your unit would definitely not be one of the integrated units. What existed in 67 was an external cassette player that was mounted either in the glovebox or under the dash, if you had cassette as an option (generally by the dealer) - which most mexico and grand prix units did as these were the top shelf units. They were tethered to the head unit and I believe only had mono output.

I have the integrated mexico date code "M"(1975) with an iPod lead mounted in the glove box that is in stereo in my 72. I stumbled upon mine on samba from a guy selling it out of a VW bus and I got it for a much better price than what they go for today. I have never seen a pre-68 Mexico for sale, but I am not looking for one either. I believe you want to look for a "D" (1967) or "E" (1966) date code. Good luck.

This is the radio you want. Mexico TR, made in mid 60s, Universal faceplate, no letter date code just serial number. I bought this for my 66 build 67S and may or may not use it, I have some Kolns also but I like the look of the Becker. They are hard to find with the universal face which is different from the more common Mercedes version. I also have the owners packet for this radio. Becker Service told me C is 1967 but the TR doesn't use a letter code.. Dr. B. Johnsons book says Mexico was offered as a factory option in 66 and Grand Prix for 67 but no Mexico, maybe until the end of the TR series? Are all later ones Mexico with cassette? Also a photo of Grand Prix, E code, with AFC.
