    early car challenge for experts

    I recently posted this Ebay auction with a warning - I'd been told the car wasn't right. Take a look at the pictures posted below the description - there are 3 definitive clues that this is not a 1966 911; can you find them? Let's ignore the 3 point belt anchors.

    You mean things that do not belong on a regular '66 like bumperets, mirror, seats, steering wheel, shift knob and shifter, floor carpets, fuchs, and engine? Looks like a perfect car for DK .

    Yeah, well - I coulda done this better; there are a lot of things on that car that aren't correct for a '66 - but you frequently see cars for sale with later seats, trans, engine, wheels, carpets etc. I was thinking more of stuff that's unlikely to be changed, and that an inexpert seller wouldn't realize is a clue. Items that are different on a '66 911 from a '66 912.

    Circuit panel in engine compartment, gauges (3 vs. 5 as well as speedo/tach numbers), dash fascia is aluminum and would probably be wood, wipers park on wrong side

    It is a 912 converted to a 911. Not too hard to figure that out. Maybe the seller is not aware of that. The chassis number is not listed and would be a dead giveaway. There is nothing wrong with the shoulder belt nounting, though.

    The motor mounts have definately been patched in. Wipers can be fixed easily.

    1966 912. My first car. Bought it Nov. 25, 1988. Still have it.

    Always something to be learned here. When I looked through the pics I saw;

    120mph speedo
    Aluminum dash trim
    rear seats are the later style, not the 911 '65 -'67 scoops

    Marco, do 912 wipers really park on the wrong side? My '67 912 SWT has them just like a 911. Also, could you see that it was 3 gauge? I didn't see a picture of it; I figure the seller was hiding that and the VIN# because they're dead giveaways.
    Jim, would that shoulder belt rig have been available on a '66? I thought that was the '68 setup.

    My wiper comment was based on this car - not 911/912 necessarily - and my gauge comment was based on 911/912 and not necessarily this particular car (although it looks like a 3 gauge car in one of the photos). I didn't give much credence to to interior cues because if the car was retrimmed that could easily have been left out.

    The wipers could just not be parked properly; the dash trim has been changed (radio delete); gauges are tough to swap because they clamp in; the circuit panel in the engine compartment would be different 911 to 912

    But, mostly I don't know what I'm talking about and the pictures are purposefully vague.

    66s, both 911s and 912s had the shoulder belt mount in the same place as 68s. 66 and 67s had a 6mm captive nut and the 68 had a 8mm captive nut for the shoulder belt bolt. The belts appear to be from the 69/70 seats and would not be found in 66s, though. There are no Stainless Steel end caps on the bumpers as would be the case with 911s. The pictures are either very cleverly composed to cover up clues, or just plain lousy. That car is a mess!

    Regards

    Jim
