My mechanic is Richard Goncalves at ROCS autos inc. Belleville, New Jersey. He’s very talented …an honest, straight shooter… that’s gold in my book. I’ve know him for 20 years.

You have to realize I was running as low as I absolutely could run and even though I got used to the feel, it had my shocks taking a beating and the car always felt on the edge—very hard and unforgiving. Rough roads had the front end bouncing around. Once my mechanic said, “You know, we really should raise that car up a little bit.” I told him it was against my religion.

Later we talked about raising the spindles and told me the advantages… I said, “lets do it”.

Alas…I’m not mechanically inclined. But the difference is amazing. Its difficult to explain but now that the geometry of the suspension up front is where it should be, the car feels more stable, less light and bouncy up front…much more planted and responsive.

Its always been a blast to drive but now I can really appreciate how the suspension is suppose to respond and I haven't had to compromise my religious beliefs.
    That's a great feeling.
Mark, excellent narrative. I understand completely, I think My car is lowered of course and though it handles amazingly well, it is harsh for a street car. I am sure it would benefit from what you did so it is on the list. Someone above (meistro Harvey) mentioned 17mm vs 19mm and something about wheel clearance. It seems as the most common is 19mm.I am running 9's up front. Can someone w knowledge comment? Thx

The 2mm of extra clearance is for your wheel weights. As mentioned earlier, I just moved my wheel weights further inboard on the wheel.

To add to Mark's description, when I raised mine, I noticed that it understeered a lot less too. Plus, not having the steering wheel ripped out of your hands on every bump makes driving the car way less stressful. You can relax and concentrate on driving it, instead of chasing the steering wheel all the time.

Also, not many people think about this, but when you raise your spindles, make sure your spare wheel fits over your spindles with no issues. I'm running 16" Fuchs, so I raised my spindles 30mm. I had to move my wheel weights inboard to clear the ball joint. A couple of days later, it dawned on me that my spare is a 15" wheels. So it had no prayer of fitting, therefore I was hauling around worthless weight. I immediately bought an aluminum 944 spare and made sure it fit before throwing in the Frunk.

    This was a coupla weeks ago . . .

    Took a comparison shot --- w/ my Every Day . . . I'm always saying how roomy/spacious e30's are . . .

    . . . then went to the Vet --- meds for my muttsker . . .

    . . . the car parts place --- oil filters + H4 bulbs for the BMW. . .

    . . . + finished-off w/ a hair cut

Great little run-about. Just think how cool running errands would be --- if everybody did them in a 911!

Yesterday was the Post Office, then? . . .

    . . . a wee-bit 'o traffic to get to . . .

. . . the Grant Boys --- lookin' for a hat . . . for the White Gloves Show. But? --- it turns out that the place is closed, like . . . forever. Too bad. They had tons 'o stuff a Tenderfoot like me could always goof-around with --- hats + bandanas, knives + flashlights, guns + ammo --- even Levi's! Now what?

Scooted over/dropped by European Collectibles. Man --- is that place is packed w/ Porsches or what?. No pics = their web-site does a mucho better trabajo --- but . . . feels like a Good Time to be a-Buyin'

    Then? --- just a liiiiiiitle more traffic, + . . .

    . . . finished-up @REI . . . + got a hat! $20 Parked in the 'ding-free' zone

took a long ride in the mountains to Pocahontas, VA--an old mining town. Saw a new very red Ferrari 458 in the most unlikely place--Bluefield WV.

Just got back from a little trip with my 72 S. 4500 mile round trip from Ft.Worth to the Porsche Parade up in Vermont. First took a side detour to visit Dave Miller up in Virginia. He set us up with some touristy stuff in D.C. Then on to the Parade. Ran the autocross of course, and even got to ride the ferry across Lake Champlain. As is usual with these old relics the car never missed a beat, needing only gas and oil. Unfortunately the same couldn't be said for local friends whose Cayenne needed two trips to the dealer, and then stayed at the second dealer while they went to Parade in a rented Dodge van. Ya gotta love it!!
