1968 Australian Racing 911

Please pardon my lack of knowledge on whether this is significant or not, but I figured someone here, especially in Australia, would find some interest. Is this a significant car?

OH YES! It is a T/R model, and a significant car besides that. The car is well known. VIN 11820897 I believe.

I learn something new every day. Here I figured the R was for Renn, or Race... Only to discover it's Rallye.

yes a very famous car - which came 2nd by a very close margin in the Australian Touring Car championship, against huge v8's.

my late father and I attended a talk given by Alan Hamilton many years ago, and this was one of his favourite cars. This was a fellow who owned (and raced) 550's 718's, 906's 908's and even the spare 91730 which sold this year at auction.

The car was sold in 1971 apparently to an American Ingersoll Rand engineer who was posted to Melbourne (where Hamiltons - now Porsche Cars Australia - were based).

He took it home and the car didn't reappear on the world stage until the early 90's, when it came up for sale in Panorama. It didn't sell for months... I loved it having heard all of the wonderful stories about the car, but was at university so all I could was dream about it.

It was for sale for well over a year from memory... and was bought by an enthusiastic and affable Australian collector who has some lovely old Porsches, as well as a very famous collection of significant Australian Touring Cars with the t/r one of those significant vehicles.

AS the owner of a 68 L I have a picture of this very car oversteering out of a right hand bend at a circuit I cannot identify on my study wall.. Its a wonderful car, that typifies sports purpose early 911's
