Research For a New Project: 1965-1973+ Orange Oil Filters

I’ve decided to spend the Colorado winter working on two projects. One requires some research and the other is pretty straight forward when it comes to 911’s.

The first project should be relatively simple to produce but very difficult to research. I’m solely focused on the research portion right now. I’m researching the ultimate throwaway item: the original early 911 oil filter. From my research Porsche used two different types of oil filters during the early 911 era. From 1965-1971 (2.0l-2.2l) Porsche started with '901.107.203.02'. This number (not sure when) was superseded to ‘901.107.203.09’ now commonly known at a Mahle OC61 or Mann W940 and beginning with the 1972 model year (2.4l-2.7l) used ‘911.107.764.00’ which was superseded to ‘930.107.764.01’(probably when the 911 Turbo came out) now commonly known as a Mahle OC54 or Mann W940/29. I’ve heard and read that the filters were actually produced by Mahle with Purolator branding. Strange arrangement… anyone know any more on this? I’ll be looking into it.

Great, so we know the breakdown of which oil filters to use but now comes the hard part… what the heck did they look like?! We have a start thanks to three earlyS members by looking at two well-known low mileage early 911’s they photographed.

The silver 700 mile 1970 911S photographed by Cornpanzer shows us that it is running a red/orange Porsche branded filter: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8072442...57630169538658 Unfortunately, before it was put away it got its 600mi service at Vasek where they would have undoubtedly changed the oil and filter. If fact it may have has two services as it has two stickers, one on top of the other. Anyone know for sure? We can thank Dave for photographing the service tag on the engine lid: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8072442...57630169538658 So I suspect that the filter is one that the Vasek Polak Dealership had on the shelf at the time and it’s probably not the original. They probably would have used the same style as it came over on the boat with but we can’t prove it on that particular car. It’s still a good start.

Next we have the Raymond Allen Aubergine 736 mile 1973.5 911T. Curt Egerer (CurtEgerer) and Jared Rundell (JCR) photographed this car as found in late 2008. Most of those pictures can be seen here: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...read.php?54887 It was found in the garage with an orange filter but it’s tough to tell what brand it is. The instructions on it are in English. Curt was kind enough to send these photos along:

Size: 136.9 KB

When the car was sold by Truspeed back in late ’09 the oil was probably changed along with the filter. It was then sporting a black Porsche branded filter.

The last low mileage car I know of comes from a thread about the Allen ‘73T. In post #19 of this thread: http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...read.php?58225 Eminence Gris makes note of a ’70-’72? Euro (probably) Light Ivory Targa with 131 miles on it that Seinfeld owns or did own. In any case the single pic from Eminence is all we have and there’s really nothing else to be learned unless Jerry has some kind of open house some day.

There are, without a doubt, more low mileage cars out there, and better yet probably more photos of low mileage cars from back in the day. Does anyone have photos to share of engine compartments of their newly delivered early 911’s?

Next we have the Porsche approved ‘One For the Road’ short movie filmed in 1973. Here are a few screenshots that show the oil filters:

Size: 61.2 KBName: 3.jpg

You can see the film here on Vimeo thanks to Brian Fryar:

    <iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/28284898?badge=0" width="500" height="375" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

It’s pretty low-resolution film so it’s hard to gather anything but the color of filter placed on the one CIS 73.5T and a ’73S. They are clearly that red/orange color.

So we know that in 1970 Vasek Polak used orange Porsche branded filters we have some sort of orange filter on the 73.5T and later in the model year ’73 Porsche was using orange filters on their test drives.

Factory Brochures, period magazines and Christophorus

I went through the mass of brochures scanned and organized by Alex Assink for the Classic Porsche 911/912 Club of The Netherlands: http://content.us.porsche-clubs.pors...256FB0004F331F There are three 911 brochures that they’ve scanned that show color engine shots. Anyone know of any others?

An orange oil filter appears in the March 1965 dated 911 brochure:

Size: 172.4 KBName: Porsche911 03_65c_zoom.jpg

Size: 212.5 KB

An orange oil filter appears in the July 1966 dated 911S intro brochure:

    Name: 911S_Introductie_1996_zoom.jpg
Views: 1013
Size: 114.8 KBName: 911S_Introductie_1996b_zoom.jpg
Views: 952
Size: 135.4 KB

And a largish gap of 5 years until another brochure comes along with an engine shot this one being the famous Carrera RS brochure without a date as far as I can tell. In this one you can clearly see the Porsche branded filter:

If that wasn’t enough they’ve also got a scanned Auto Motor und Sport Carrera RS road test with an engine shot as well:

I went through every Christophorus from 1963 – 1974. There was not one B&W or color photo of an engine compartment open. Lots of engine assembly line and staged shots but nothing of the engine in car as new. Oh well.

An interesting side note comes from the Carrera RS World Meeting in Stuttgart last spring. Mann filters was a sponsor and seems they produced a limited run of 500 W940/29’s with the event logo on it but more importantly in the correct orange color. I always associated the orange with Purolator but perhaps Mann has the current contact with Porsche and their brand of filter were supplied because of this.

    Part 2:

So in the previous posts I covered known cars and cars in factory brochures and period road tests with possibly/most likely period oil filters. Now we can discuss NOS period replacement filters distributed by Porsche. There have been some for sale time to time here, on eBay etc. I’ve see two different variations: there are Porsche / Purolator branded filters in Porsche boxes and there are Purolator filters in Purolator boxes. I would presume that back then (just like today) the Porsche / Purolator branded filters as seen on the Silver ‘70S would be the ones installed at the factory and available at the dealer while the Purolator filters were for the aftermarket. We can definitely see this on the filter from the RS brochure. I’m sure the Porsche ones cost a bit more too!

All of the filters I've seen have been made in either W. Germany or Austria. Externally and internally they look much more like Mahle filters instead of the Mann brand.

901pn: 901.107.203.02 (PC 34) superseded to 901.107.203.09 (PC 34/1) Anyone know what changed? There doesn't seem to me an up or a down although on the 70S and the '73RS brochure up is on the filter opening end. Judging by the maroon boxed filter (which I believe to be the older packaging) it seems that the earlier replacement filters were made in W. Germany and the later replacement filters in the white boxes were made in Austria. We'll need more NOS boxed filters to pop up to figure that one out.

901.107.203.02 aka PC 34 (Thanks Mark!)

911pn: 911.107.764.00 I've not seen any of this part number yet. Probably only used from 1972-1975. Anyone have a picture of one?

930pn: 930.107.764.01 aka PC 260. Technically correct for 1972 and up but because of the superseded part number not aesthetically correct. Still the same orange color with Porsche / Purolator logo. The first pic shows a 1980's style box and the filter has the Mahle style of logo and is labeled an OC54. The other 930 part numbered filter has the Purolator logo and is labeled a PC260. I'm thinking that the Purolator filters were used into the 930 era and at some point Porsche dropped the Purolator logo and went with the Mahle logo. Both filters show the Porsche logo.

Also of note in looking at NOS orange Porsche replacement filters… I've seen one crimp ring at the bottom painted and every other one hasn't.

Carl, I'm not much help here, but I do have a PC260 that I only put on my car for show, however it looks like you have that base covered.

Actually, Hester might be helpful. It looks like the text goes across that filter rather than around like the others.
