    Petersen Vault Tours . . .

. . . The Petersen Museum is, for the first time in its history, opening its "vault" to the public for a short time. From Saturday, December 15 through Sunday, January 6, we will be offering a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the museum to show you the space where vehicles are worked on, maintained, and stored while not on display . . .

OK --- gonna try 'n' get in

    More here . . .

While not on a 'tour' I've spent time in the vault. Very cool. Nothing uber-secret, but a fairly comprehensive fab and resto shop. Lots of trinkets. Also, take a look at the many vehicles that have been "left behind" (no kidding), forgotten, donated, etc. Just picked up my car there 2 weeks ago after a George Follmer event.

I was there back in 2003 ... it really was a vault back then. I'd been working for the Granatelli family and made a significant donation to the museum on their behalf. As a small token of appreciation my father and I got a guided tour - just us and one of the museum heads - of the vault. There were all sorts of cars, but there was also a TON of memorabilia - mostly donated items that may never see the light of day again. The one car that always stood out to me was a car I'd seen as a teenager just starting to drive - The Scheib Fury.

The Scheib Fury was owned by Early Scheib's son ... it was a Plymouth Fury with a push-button trans and a Keith Black motor ... I remember seeing this thing do wheelstands down Tampa in front of Cruiser's Car Wash on Friday nights.

There was also a bunch of old funny cars...

Almost all of the cars were dusty and had flat tires. They didn't get out much...

Look for my 1967 Dodge Coronet WO23 factory super stock. White with black interior. Factory would say, "you can have any color you want as long as it's white". I donated it years ago. Can someone take a picture of it and post it if they see it??
    Thanks

    I'd like to, but . . .

'. . . Please, NO food, drink, cameras, strollers, or contact with the vehicles. Photography is permitted in the museum, but not during the public vault tours . . .'

I took the Petersen Vault tour today. Thanks Long Ranger for the orignal heads up to this opportunity. It was good. I'd say there are more cars in the vault than on display in the museum. An awesome Bugatti, and the round-door Rolls Royce are in the vault, and not on display.. As for Porsches; 3 are in the vault...an early 911 ('64 probably)...and 1965 356 coupe...and an early 356 Continental Cabriolet.
A lot of cool cars in the vault (no photography allowed)... Ferraris, Steve McQueen Jaguar, Mercedes 300SL gullwings, etc... They call it a 'vault', but it's basically a garage, and I'd estimate it's holding 120 cars and 50 motorcycles...just an estimate.
