Thread: Targa specific factory reinforcement bar

    Targa specific factory reinforcement bar

    Hi all,

I'm trying to find out a little more about the factory reinforcement bar that runs under the dash of a targa.

It is a bolt in rectangular bar (covered with perlon usually) positioned under the lower front edge of the dash behind the knee pad. It is intended to reduce cowl shake.

Does anyone have a picture of this part?
    Cheers, Ryan

I was trying to describe this to a mate parting out a targa - those pics will be perfect.

Pretty sure all Targas up to the '80s have them, a lot new owners probably don't even know it's there... Curt, good photo BTW.

I have one out of my 67 with some of the carpet removed if you want a closer picture.
I thought it was made by the previous owner, looks just like a piece of c channel with some angle welded on the ends.

At one point, my plan was to replace that factory bar with roll bar tubing (with flanges to use the same mounting points) and tie it into door bars that, in turn, would be welded to the roll hoop. That would stiffen things up considerably (and be completely reversible).

My 73 doesn't have one. Was this discontinued with the 2.4?

    Curt,

I'm thinking of something similar - a bar each side from the same front mounting points, that crosses the door opening, and that bolts into one or both of the front/rear seat belt mounts. Bolt in, easily reversible, can be shaped to not restrict ingress/egress too much etc.

And could make garage wall art if ultimately useless...
