FS: '65 911 #301278
I'm not sure if this has been posted before…..I'm trying to help out a fellow ESSES member.
Here's a nice looking '65 911 for sale from an older gentleman and long term ESSES member Jerry Weiland. Jerry was kind enough to send me a brief description and history of the car…..it's listed below along with a photo. For the past 24 years the car has been in Jerry's care as well as a fellow collector in Minnesota. The car is currently located in Geneva, IL….40 miles west of Chicago. From what I've gathered the car was originally a factory special order color for '65 'Togo Brown'….it's now Light Ivory. The original engine / transmission has been replaced with a '68 911. Jerry has tried to track down the original engine and trans for years with no success (engine #901428 & transmission #101349). There was an engine posted on eBay recently that was close to the original number. The car is 95% rust free and is in excellent driver condition.
Jerry truly loves this car and wants it to go to someone who's a true enthusiast like himself.

MY HISTORY WITH THE 1965 PORSCHE 301278
I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM A COLLECTOR IN SOUTHERN MINNESOTA IN 1999. HE HAD BOUGHT IT IN PHOENIX, AZ IN 1990 AND HAD IT SHIPPED TO HIS HOME. HE DROVE IT ONLY RARELY BUT CARED FOR IT WELL AND IT WAS ALWAYS KEPT IN A WARM AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT. IT HAS SOME UNIQUE TRIM FEATURES WHICH WERE ONLY ON THE VERY EARLY CARS. THE IGNITION ESCUTCHEON IS MADE OF POLISHED BRASS, BOTH THE GEAR SHIFT AND HANDBRAKE BOOTS ARE LEATHER AND THE DASHBOARD KNEE PAD IS STRAIGHT ACROSS INSTEAD OF BENT UPWARDS AT THE ENDS.
MILEAGE READS 31,921 CURRENTLY WHICH IS PROBABLY 131, 921 ALTHOUGH IT COULD EASILY PASS FOR 31K. IT WAS IN GOOD CONDITION OVERALL WHEN I BOUGHT IT BUT NEEDED A LOT OF ATTENTION. THE ONLY RUST I COULD FIND WAS IN THE FRONT CROSS BRACE. HOWEVER, IT DIDN’T SEEM TO AFFECT THE CAR IN ANY WAY SO I HAVE NEVER BOTHERED WITH IT. THERE IS NO RUST WHATEVER UNDER THE BATTERY, IN THE TRUNK, OR UNDER THE GAS TANK. THERE IS NO RUST ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE CAR. THERE WAS A HALF DOLLAR SIZED SPOT I FOUND IN THE LOWER AREA OF THE LEFT FRONT FENDER WHICH I DISCOVERED WHEN I REMOVED THE TRIM. I HAD IT REPAIRED WITH NEW METAL WHEN I HAD PARTS PAINTED CONVERTING THE CAR BACK TO ORIGINAL. MORE ON THIS LATER.
I OBTAINED A CERTIFICATE OF ORIGINALITY FROM PORSCHE WHICH SHOWED IT WAS SOLD IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. IT IS TITLED AS A 1966, AS WAS TRUE OF ALL PORSCHES SHIPPED TO THE U.S. IN 1965 BUT THE VIN NUMBER OF 301278 PROVES IT TO HAVE BEEN BUILT IN THE LATE SPRING OF 1965. THE TITLE COULD BE ALTERED TO SHOW THE CORRECT DATE BUT I HAVE NEVER PURSUED IT. I HAVE A LARGE QUANTITY OF SERVICE RECORDS DATING FROM THE 80’S WHICH SHOW THE CAR WAS ALWAYS IN CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA. THE C OF A SHOWED THE ENGINE WAS NOT ORIGINAL. IT WAS A “T” ENGINE FROM ABOUT 1968 AND RAN WELL BUT WHEN A 1968 “E” ENGINE APPEARED FOR SALE I PURCHASED IT. IT IS THE SAME DIMENSIONS AND HORSEPOWER AS THE ORIGINAL. I ALSO FOUND A FIVE SPEED TRANSMISSION TO REPLACE THE FOUR SPEED WHICH WAS IN THE CAR WHEN I BOUGHT IT. IT ALSO HAD AIR CONDITIONING BUT IT DIDN’T WORK SO I PULLED THE COMPRESSOR, EVAPORATOR AND CONDENSOR BUT LEFT THE HOSES. ALL A/C PARTS WILL BE INCLUDED WITH THE CAR IF IT IS SOLD.
I HAD A COUPLE OF YEARS WORKING AS AN AUTO MECHANIC IN MY YOUTH AND HAVE ALWAYS DONE MOST OF THE WORK ON CARS I HAVE OWNED OVER THE YEARS SO I WAS NOT AFRAID OF PULLING THE DRIVE TRAIN TO REPLACE IT. THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A NUMBER OF THINGS NEEDING ATTENTION ON THE CAR AND I HAVE MANAGED TO GET THEM ALL REPAIRED OR REPLACED OVER THE YEARS. IT IS IN FIRST CLASS MECHANICAL CONDITION AND I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO GET IT IN IT TODAY AND HEAD FOR THE WEST COAST.
WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR, A PREVIOUS OWNER HAD CONVERTED IT TO LOOK LIKE A LATER VERSION “S” MODEL. IT WAS PAINTED WHITE RATHER THAN THE ORIGINAL TOGO BROWN. IT HAD BLACK TRIM AROUND THE WINDOWS, “S” TYPE FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS, FULL “PORSCHE” REFLECTOR ACROSS THE REAR, “S” TYPE ENGINE COVER AND GRILL, MAHLE WHEELS AND ALL “S” TRIM ON THE BUMPERS AND SIDES. IT LOOKED GOOD BUT I ALWAYS PREFERRED THE ORIGINAL APPEARANCE SO I BEGAN COLLECTING PARTS TO RETURN IT TO THE WAY IT LOOKED IN 1965. THAT WAS A MAJOR UNDERTAKING BUT FINALLY ACCOMPLISHED OVER A NUMBER OF YEARS.
ALTHOUGH THE INTERIOR AND TRUNK WERE IN GOOD CONDITION OVERALL, I DECIDED TO REPLACE THE CARPET WITH ORIGINAL GERMAN WEAVE WOOL MATERIAL. I ALSO REPLACED THE HEADLINER AND REPLACED THE BLACK PLASTIC STEERING WHEEL WITH A NEWLY REFURBISHED CORRECT – AND GORGEOUS – WOOD MODEL. THE SEATS WERE FLO-FIT FABRIC COVERED AND I LIKED THEM BUT NOT CORRECT FOR THE CAR SO I FOUND A NICE PAIR OF ORIGINALS AND REPLACED THEM. INCIDENTALLY, I REMOVED ALL THE OLD HORSE HAIR TYPE INSULATION ON THE FLOORS, CLEANED THE SURFACES, FOUND THEM IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND PAINTED THEM WITH POR-15. WHEN THE UPHOLSTERING WAS DONE, ALL NEW SOUNDPROOFING MATERIAL WAS INSTALLED UNDER THE GERMAN WEAVE. WHILE THE INTERIOR WAS APART, I REPLACED THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND PUT NEW BUSHINGS IN THE ENTIRE PEDAL ASSEMBLY. AFTER REASSEMBLING THE INTERIOR, I INSTALLED INERTIA REEL PORSCHE SEAT BELTS. I FABRICATED MOUNTING BRACKETS FOR THIS PROJECT WHICH MOUNT IN THE ORIGINAL HOLES SO NO NEW HOLES NEEDED TO BE DRILLED. OF COURSE, THEY ARE NOT ORIGINAL TO THE CAR BUT ARE FAR SUPERIOR. THERE WERE NO BELTS WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR BUT IF A NEW OWNER WISHED, THEY COULD BE OBTAINED AND INSTALLED PER STOCK. THE WEBASTO GAS HEATER WAS REMOVED, TAKEN APART, CLEANED, LUBRICATED, PAINTED AND REPLACED. IT LOOKS GREAT AND IS PROBABLY USEABLE BUT HAS NOT BEEN TESTED. THE EXHAUST PIPE FOR THE UNIT IS RUSTED. I HAVE A DOWNLOAD FOR THE MANUAL.
REPLACING THE HEADLINER AND THE BLACK WINDOW TRIM REQUIRED REMOVAL OF THE WINDSHIELDS AND QUARTER WINDOWS. THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WAS BROKEN IN THIS PROCESS SO A NEW ONE IS NOW IN PLACE.
THE DASHBOARD HAS BEEN REUPHOLSTERED WITH SOMETHING WHICH IS APPARENTLY A FIRST FOR THE EARLY CARS. 1965 THROUGH 1968 MODELS HAD A RADIO SPEAKER BENEATH THE DASHBOARD AND A PATTERN OF HOLES PUNCHED IN THE MATERIAL FOR THE SOUND TO EMERGE. THAT PATTERN IS UNAVAILABLE – ANYWHERE. I PONDERED MANY SOLUTIONS SUCH AS HAND PUNCHING BUT FOUND NOTHING THAT WOULD WORK UNTIL THE IDEA OF LASER CUTTING CAME TO ME. I TOOK SOME MATERIAL TO A LOCAL LASER CUTTING COMPANY AND ASKED IF THEY COULD MAKE IT WORK. TO MY DELIGHT, THEY TRIED IT AND WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PATTERN EXACTLY. IT CAME OUT PERFECTLY. AS GETTING THE PROGRAMMING DONE WAS VERY EXPENSIVE, I DECIDED TO HAVE 10 PANELS CUT AS THE COST WAS THEN SPREAD. I PUT AN AD ON EBAY TELLING THE STORY AND OFFERING THEM FOR SALE. THEY SOLD QUICKLY SO I HAVE HAD MORE DONE AND THEY HAVE BEEN SHIPPED TO EUROPE, AFRICA, AND SOUTH AMERICA.
ON THE EXTERIOR, I HAVE MOUNTED H-1 HEADLIGHTS BUT STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL CLEAR LENS LIGHTS. IF THE CAR IS SOLD, THE NEW OWNER CAN HAVE HIS CHOICE, BUT NOT BOTH. THE DRIVING LIGHTS ARE THE CORRECT HELLA MODELS AND ARE NEW OLD STOCK. THEY ARE NOT HOOKED UP BUT I HAVE THE ORIGINAL HELLA BOXES WITH PRINTED INSTRUCTIONS. THEY WILL GO WITH THE CAR.
THE SLANTED “911” EMBLEM ON THE ENGINE COVER AND THE TWO PIECE “PORSCHE” EMBLEM ALONG WITH THE GRILL ARE ALL CORRECT. THE “S” TRIM ON THE SIDES AND REAR BUMPERS IS NOT CORRECT BUT I HAVE BRAND NEW ONES WHICH WILL GO WITH THE CAR. THE CHROME WHEELS ARE SLIGHTLY BLISTERED BUT LOOK GREAT. THE ORANGE STRIPE PORSCHE EMBLEM CARRIES A PORSCHE PART NUMBER.
OVER THE YEARS, I HAVE REPLACED ALL OF THE FLEXIBLE BRAKE LINES AS WELL AS THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE ENTIRE SYSTEM WAS FLUSHED AND NEW FLUID INSTALLED RECENTLY. THE BRAKES ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND WORK VERY WELL.
THE CLUTCH DISC AND PRESSURE PLATE ARE NEW AND THE FLYWHEEL HAS BEEN REFACED. WHEN THIS WAS DONE, LAST YEAR, I INSTALLED NEW SSI STAINLESS STEEL HEAT EXCHANGERS.
THE REAR SUSPENSION BUSHINGS, INCLUDING THE BANANA ARMS, ARE NEW.
THE CAR RUNS BEAUTIFULLY AND ALWAYS GATHERS A CROWD. THE PAINT HAS A NUMBER OF CHIPS BUT LOOKS FINE OVERALL. NEITHER THE PREVIOUS OWNER OR MYSELF HAVE EVER DRIVEN THE CAR IN SNOW, AND ONLY RARELY IN RAIN. I HAVE A HEATED, CLEAN SHOP FOR STORAGE AND ONLY DRIVE FOR PLEASURE. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN RACED.
IT IS BETTER THAN A “DRIVER” BUT IT ISN’T “CONCOURS”. THE NON-ORIGINAL DRIVE TRAIN WOULD PROBABLY BE A HINDRANCE TO IT BECOMING A TOP VALUE CAR BUT I DOUBT THE CONDITION COULD BE EXCEEDED OVERALL BY MANY. THE UNDERSIDE IS AS IT WAS WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. I HAVE NEVER CLEANED IT AS I FEEL THE PATTERNS IN THE DIRT ARE AN EXCELLENT INDICATOR OF THE CONDITION AND WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED IN ITS HISTORY. SOME MAY DISAGREE AND IT COULD CERTAINLY BE MADE TO LOOK LIKE NEW IF DESIRED.
THE REASON FOR SELLING THE CAR IS MY AGE (75) AND THE FACT THAT I RARELY DRIVE IT. I’D LIKE TO SEE IT GO TO A HOME WHERE IT WOULD BE TREASURED AS IT HAS BY MYSELF AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER.
