Thread: When did peanut headrests replace D shaped headrests?

When did peanut headrests replace D shaped headrests?

Are the peanut headrests a 72-73 only thing?

I don't know all the years. But certainly in 73, the D shaped headrest was for the leather seats and the peanut was for vinyl.

hmmm interesting. I have never seen a leather D headrest? I have a pair of 72/73 seats with peanut headrests and a pair with D.... all are vinyl and 72/73 seats... which ones are correct?

I am out of town, and away from my Dr. Johnson's book. But, I think that is where I read it - and it probably has more details.

I have a '73, with D, and leather, and it says leather on the invoice as well. But, I'm basing this on Dr. Johnson, not my personal car.

Personally, I don't like the Ds and still don't, even after learning they were the leather ones.

Here is a thread on this site that mentions the D headrests as the leather ones (or actually the peanuts as the vinyl ones).

That makes sense. Here is a 72 vinyl with peanuts. The D headrests I have seen so far have all been vinyl too tho.

Dr. K in his RS book lists BOTH D and "peanut" headrests as available on the '73 RS.....no differentiation between leatherette and leather.

Thank you for checking Mark. I read Brett's book, no real details in there. Strange. My 61k original miles 72 coupe also had peanuts, original vinyl interior. Did the D's somehow get phased out?

Both the 'peanut' & D-shaped headrests were available in vinyl but, as far as I know, if your '72/'73 car was ordered with leather seats, the supplied leather headrests were always the D-shaped variety.

My IT 73S came with cinnamon leatherette/32 as the factory designation for my interior. It has tan tartan seat inserts with beige D headrests. The beige matches the background of the tartan. 10/72 build. The car is #310. This all confirmed by the original owner who bought it off the showroom floor at Delcar in Varese, Italy. Those Italians have style. The paint is aubergine and interior vinyl.
