    1967 911S Interior Mirror

The stalk on the L came from my 67S the one on the R is for sure the 67S mirror stalk. The one that came with my S seems to be the standard 67 mirror, but if you notice has about a 1" extension attached.

If anyone can shed some light on this is is much appreciated.

The S mirror stalk is shorter. The mirror part for the 67S is also larger so maybe that has something to do with it.

Curious, my 67S has the left mirror mount; I believe my car pretty original and I have owned it since 1979. Mfg date was Oct66 so maybe there was a change in mount design?

I have had 100s of mirrors from 67 Porsches. I can't say that I have ever seen an extension like the one you show. The stalk on the left is used with a chrome mirror. The same mirror was used in 356Cs and 911s and 912s, until the change to the mirror stalk on the right, which used a plastic mirror head. Im convinced that the "extension" is home made to accept some other brand X mirror. The plastic mirrors were only used near the end of production of 67 cars. It is not just a 911S thing, even though it is often referred to as a "911S" mirror. They came on all models of late 67 Porsches. A close up to the 2 stalks is the last picture.

And what Jim says, makes sense because my 911 coupe 308007 and 911 Targa 500679 both have the 'S' type mirror.

Mine has the extension and chassis number is 306602S. It is possible the OEM mirror could have been replaced...

So, is your mirror head plastic or metal? If it is plastic, it could be that there was a short period of transition until they changed to the later stalk. Having 2 "extensions" pretty much rules out it being home made as I stated previously. Interesting stuff!

That extension is made 100% perfect for the mirror.

I replaced my mirror 20 years ago with one from a BMW 2002 which was a very good replacement for size and appearance however the mount is OEM; replacement mirror is black plastic and I recall my "original" mirror was plastic and was deteriorating which lead me to the current mirror. Since my original posting I must add that the right hand side of my car was replaced with panels from a 1968 and this indicates a reasonably large occurrence. The possibility that the rear vision mirror was damaged and replaced at that time is real so my input must be dismissed as possibly/probably misleading. My mirror mount does have the longer mount with the extension piece as pictured on the left in the first thread. Perhaps a replacement mirror at that time included the extension to allow installation of a taller piece of glass used in a mirror of easy availability at that time.
