Does anyone know this steering wheel?

    Hi there,

Does anyone know this steering wheel? I actually like it much better then my Momo Prototipo.
Any information on brand, type, diameter, etc. is welcome. And please let me know if you might have one for sale

Very interesting. I'd like to see a few more detail photos... What does the engraving say on the front of the bottom spoke? And are there any stampings on the back?

Looks like a 356 B/C horn button fabricated on a Momo S. Does your horn work with this setup?? I can't see how it would be able to be pushed.

I don't think it's a MOMO S or Prototipo S as they were later called... those don't have spoke holes to my knowledge.

Munich, if it's what I think it is, it's a rare, early dished prototipo/monza -- like you would see on 917, 908, 910 to name a few. Note the pads on all three spokes. These early dished wheels were exclusively supplied, by Gianpiero Moretti to factory race teams and some independent teams, and were not available to regular customers. They are pretty much impossible to find ... I feel pretty fortunate to have two.
and, of course, this is only my best guess with the research I've done. Even the people who were closest to Moretti, and I've spoken to many of them... agree with me but don't know with absolute certainty.

Mark: i have that three thumb pad black spoke dished MOMO wheel with six allen head attachment but it is engraved with the OEM manufacturer's logo: ALPINA. It came attached to a custom ordered, wide body 2002 delivered new by Burkard Bovensiepen KG. I may have another similar dished three thumb pad example with silver spokes that needs a new skin. I think Bovensiepen fits the description of the sort of customer you describe that had access to that early dished wheel: active factory sponsored race team in major European events in both Gr 2 and Rallye, and a TUV certified OEM in his own right. The padding in these ALPINA examples is markedly softer than a contemporary 1970 standard issue prototipo. Both are stamped with the stacked MOMO logo on the back, as is a flat three thumb pad ALPINA wheel I bought from a '67 1602 being parted out in San Diego some years ago.

That's a wheel I would enjoy seeing. It's not remarkable to see Alpina in the mix of these rare competition MOMOs... it seems BMW have always been a well connected bunch in the racing world and I've seen many, many cool early Moretti/Momo wheels stamped for Alpina. Speaking strictly about these prototipo/monza/alpina competition wheesl -- The stacked MOMO logo is exactly in line for when these were produced -- late 1967 through approximately 1973. But I actually believe these were discontinued around 1970 or 1971. Very neat information Tom.
