These are great. I find them fascinating. Looking around in the backgrounds etc seem to say so much about what it was like when taken.

That first "bomber" shot is now a restaurant in Portland.

1966 912. My first car. Bought it Nov. 25, 1988. Still have it.
Cool! I used to drive by the remnants of the Cucamonga station every day...

In 1913, Gulf Refining Company opened the nation's first drive-in service station at the corner of Baum Boulevard and St. Clair Street in Pittsburgh. The pagoda-style brick facility offered free air, water, crankcase service, and tire and tube installation. On its first day, the station sold 30 gallons of gasoline at 27 cents per gallon. On its first Saturday, Gulf's new service station pumped 350 gallons of gasoline.

That was cool. Thank you.
Cool link... it's interesting that gas station architecture evolution followed local/regional tastes. Examples like the Pittsburg Gulf and the Cucamonga Garage are terrific. That Goodyear service center is epic. The self-serve Gilmore is a surprise, never considered that self-serve wasn't a recent thing. Today's homogenized buildings are bland. There a few old gas stations that have survived down here, like this old Atlantic station near the 5th street bridge in Miami, now a paint store. You can sort of imagine what it was like with pumps out front when the street was two lanes.

This gem was in Coral Gables... most of the original building is gone, what was left was "restored" for commercial space.

Had this posted on the RGruppe site, but though it might also be warranted here...

My friend's dad owned a couple of Gulf stations in the 60s/70s. One is still there, virtually unchanged, except that it has been a locksmith shop for 30 years or so. This is the station where I got my LeMans McQueen poster
