A friend of mine has an earlier engine (complete) on his bench... how much would that be worth in comparison to this...

My guess is that more engines than cars made it through the years. In other words is a 64 engine worth so much if the car doesn't longer exist or is just speculation? And what is the difference between a 64 and (early) 65 engine, they are both not matching if it's not the engine that the car left the factory with.

    Richard, I couldn't agree more!
Btw, I think in general people are too much concerned about the "matching numbers" issue, I deal with that discussion every day in my work.
My 64 is non matching, the engine is from the same month, correct enough and totally ok with me, the car is as valuable to me...:-)

I've been to the seller's yard... there are a couple dozen acres of rusty German wrecks. It's the kids selling off dad's accumulation. Unconfirmed rumor says there were Mercedes gullwings stacked 3 high via forklift inside. Outside, open shells exposed to the weather. For a long time, I think their only sales were to shops doing insurance repairs, so they got used to asking super premium prices.

But, if you were thinking about the "matching numbers" value to the chassis this engine goes into, you'd have to say the asking price isn't out of whack. I just thought adding $43 for shipping to a $49K price was a bit tone deaf.

Than there dad probably was Rudi Klein. You might find the story about him on the internet. He also had a Carrera Abarth among the Gullwings. Some of the cars were probably sold after the IRS mind his business.

According to my notes, the chassis number for this engine may have fallen between #300150 and 300185. So to one guy in the world -- somewhere -- this case is a no brainer.
