    America`s Cup

for those who like speed on the water, take some time and explore the videos on the Americacup.com web-site.They have chosen cats for the Cup in San Francisco this year and the trial boats are 45 ft and the cup boats are 74ft.All carbon fiber with mylar foils, that make 40 knots in 20 knot winds. For those of us who have dumped a hobbie or two,you know that s--- happens fast and at forty knots,it can have catastrophic results on your wallet and you body unless you are a government or Larry Ellison. Here is one of the US boats after burying a hull. They are wearing helmits for a reason.

Pitch Pole a Hobie? Never in my life.
Thanks for the link. Some people really do have fun with their money.

    Money???

Reminds of a late '80's interview with Ted Turner. Things weren’t going very well for most of his tell/com concerns at the time and the interviewer asked him if he was ‘in real money trouble’. Turner’s response was “Lady, when I’m in real money trouble you’ll be seeing me selling my boats… not before” .....

    … and so it goes

Hey Chuck,Same goes for an interview with one of the Hunt brothers back in the sixties when asked about the son,Lamar, who was the owner of the Chiefs franchise. He was losing a million a year on salaries.A large sum back then. When asked about it,he replied not to worry about it,he would be broke in a hundred years. The French have allotted 90 million for one boat.Ellison must think they`re pikers!

One of those guys hanging on the boat is a visitor to our First of the Month Rgruppe get together. He owns a Hotrod , early 911.

One of my other love besides Porsches is windsurfing and the fastest I've gone is around 30 knots - and believe me it feels like you're going 50mph. So 40 knots in a sail powered hull(s) is damn fast, now factor in about 3 knot ebb tile in the Crissy Field bay with decent size swells = exhilarating.

Hanging 40+Ft after burying the hull = scary

Back in the day when selling boats was my day job, I sailed on a 70 foot Santa Cruz ultralight at 27 knots. I've driven miles on the track and the street and I have never experienced a sensation of speed that even came close.

I love this stuff. Still sail a Hobie 14 I’ve owned since 1975. There is nothing quite like flying a hull at 20 knots.
