That's going to leave a mark!
I wonder if Randy Wells missed a shift in my car if he would pay for a new engine??!! Good thing he doesn't miss shifts!

Ouch- I was scared to sit in a 917, let alone drive it!

oh comon. sue the guy? good grief. owner seems like a dick to ruin some guys life over an engine... I'd sock the guy in the eye.
Seems like the journalist should have had insurance though, thats for sure. Clearly he was uninsured? What if he would have wrecked it? Bad.

A 917 that can't rev to 8200 rpms? Hmm...

Man up and split it boys!
David's not a dick... and the journo has racing experience with a variety of cars both vintage and modern. But this wasn't a race.
Sounds like when it happened, claims were exchanged, escalating what might have been peaceably resolved without lawyers.
Unfortunate things happen, but maybe he (or his editors) should have had a "worst case" policy. Bet they will in the future.
Meanwhile, the guy will likely be OK. About 20,000 sympathetic UK car guys can send him five bob each: he's golden. Top Gear?

Luckily it was only a replica according to http://swns.com/news/motoring-journa...-engine-30381/
It's common sense that you return something loaned in the condition you received it. Like Bob said, if you can't afford it, you can't afford to borrow it either.
