    69-73 Rear Wheel Bearings

These parts seem to becoming difficult to obtain and prices are increasing.

Over on the Bird they are around $76 which is quite expensive but typical of the prices I have also found in the UK.

The size is 42 x 75 x 37 and they are Double Row.

    The FAG part number is 33 41 1 130 617

By some happy coincidence they are also used as Rear Wheel Bearings on a BMW 3 Series E46 typical model year 2001. They may also fit other 3 Series types but I am not 100% sure.

If you buy them from the BMW side of the site they are $36.00 each.

$80 a pair is not a bad saving.

Chris did you drop a '1' out of that FAG part no.?

    33 41 1 130 617 ?

My Google search came up with nothing without the extra digit, and lots with it. Great info by the way ....

    Mick,

Unfortunately I did, but not deliberately and have now corrected the original post. GSF have them on line for £19.50 each including delivery and VAT. They are cheaper on line than buying from their store!

Thanks Chris. Pelican has also been out of stock on the $76 ones for a while now.

Chris, I wanted to thank you again for this helpful hint. I ordered the BMW E46 FAG bearings from Pelican and just finished installing them (and rebuilding rear calipers (thank you Eric for the PMB how-to), and fixing oil leaks, and repacking CV joints... ack) in the 914 and they went in perfectly.

BTW they were FAGs made in Slovenia FWIW.

Just bought a pair of the FAG's and installed them over the weekend.

www.AutohausAZ.com has them for $30 each. They also have a cheaper option.

Installing them is relatively easy - clean the bearing recess in the trailing arm, put the bearing in the freezer overnight and carefully drift it in using only the outer edge, not the inner race ..... or use a press if you have one.

Getting the old one out is often a lot more fun. Lots of posts on here about how to build a simple cheap puller out of plumbing parts and a threaded bar. Usually you will trash the old bearing talking it out - never re-use no matter what.

    Do a search ....

Easier said then done. Second time doing it so learned from previous mistakes. A Sir Tool is extremely helpful to press out and in the old and new bearings. A trick to the trade. Get the hub hot and the new bearing will slide right in. Second trick to the trade, if excessive force is needed to get the bearing in or out somthing is wrong. Stop and figure it out.

Let me know if you have any questions as it is all fresh in my mind.
