    Saturday, 06-Apr

We had a bit of a late start, heading-off for Fontana on Saturday. Shower, coffee + breakfast, ‘what’s the weather’ (me) + ‘what to wear’ (NOT me), ‘where we going’ (me) . . . print a map --- ’80 miles!’ . . . (me)

    Chaos

Doors shut + down the drive @7:45 AM . . . 'whoops --- where’s the lawn chairs?' Park in the street + back to the house + open the garage + pull stuff out + re-arrange/pack/load + close-up the house/garage + out, again --- ~7:55?

    Had to be there by 8:30 . . . diiiiiiiiiiiiidn’t quite make it. 8:45

Let’s hear it for wide-ratio trans. Of all the ratios offered in ’70, according to Bryce’s gear chart, 1059’s ‘01’ ‘box has the lowest 1st gear + the highest 5th gear --- see post #427 + 8

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ty-nine/page43

    Not as sexy-sounding as a ‘Nurburgring’ or ‘airport’ set, maybe --- but a relatively moderate 3500 RpM = 140 KpH = ~ 90 MpH

    For something so small/old/obsolete? . . . . frickin’ car flies!

I’ll say this again --- Old 911s just destroy distance + traffic. Driving? Feels more like I’m riding on the back of a hornet --- holding on as we tomahawk through a herd of cattle. Most of the traffic we came across, going out, didn’t even know we there . . . . ‘till we weren’t

Gimme an Old 911 --- at Pace. The noise, the buzzing, the wind shear of passing, the uncanny prehensile traction of 40-some-year-old torsion bars + 185-section tires to the Super Slab . . . MFI --- bellowing. 1059 would be a real handful on a twisty road, + scarier. But Out Here --- wonderful little GT

Anyway, at one point, as we’re on the 210, winging our way out through Claremont/Upland/Thereabouts --- up ahead . . . I see this dusky-manilla-colored 911, heading East, at a proper Republican pace. ‘Hey! --- ‘at looks like Marco!’ But as we close-up, I see this ‘Turbo Carrera’ script on his tail + spoiler --- which this car definitely was NOT, so . . . I figured it was just some Knucklehead ‘upgrading’ his Ride the Old-fashioned Way --- with decals, so . . .

    At’s not Marco

On our way we go. I did eye-ball a half-cage showing thru his back-glass as we passed-by, so I figured that Dusky-manilla was prolly going to the same Show we were, so --- when he pulled-up in our Six, formed-up . . . no problem. Law-enforcement multiple-target/-choice

Nothing competitive, now . . . just a Coupla Guys flying formation. Besides, Zovig loves riding in 1059, so --- apart from the Occasional Non-signaling Lane-changer/Wandering Road Hazard . . . I would rather her sorties in the Nasty Car be relatively fear-free

So, we get off at Cherry, drive past a coupla stop-signs ---- Fontana, out there, looks like someplace out of a Road Warrior movie . . . ‘till at this stoplight, Dusky-manilla --- who’s stayed politely behind, this whole time . . . pulls-up, moves right, comes up along-side --- ‘it IS Marco,’ Zovig says . . . and I look over . . .

. . . just as he raises a cup ‘o coffee in his left hand

Later . . . ‘hard to keep up with you,’ he says

    Oh - thanks! . . .

    . . . I feel better

    1) Ready for The Show. Tanked-up + cleaned the glass (outside, anyway) . . . but skipped the tires + wheels + rubber stuff

    2) Show check-in. Although it might look like it --- and it's almost as far away . . . Fontana is NOT in Eastern Europe

    '50 Years of 911s' . . .

    Here we go . . .

    . . . starting with a '64

Belongs to the Peterson Museum. Don't know anything about this particular car --- or '64s, in general . . . but here's some shots so you can at least get a look at this one

    More '50 years' . . .

Sorry not to have any better shots, but this car was all 'barricaded' off --- the only car, there, that was . . . which was kinda annoying. I know that it's a 'special' car, but c'mon!

I mean, Jeez --- I left my windows down + lid up --- keys in the ignition . . . no problem. Everybody seemed real excited about the cars + the occasion . . . + totally respectful. ('Cept for Tony --- )

    Whatever . . .

Could not quite get the 901 in focus... Still trying to learn all the features on that little Sony.
