    911 50th

Dig these quality Factory images from the following press release seen today:

    http://theage.drive.com.au/motor-new...211-2e7zd.html

....really shows how far dimensionally the 901 has come.

Looks like the Factory has trotted out 302503 (6401 Slate Grey with red), as they always do; that is one well used Museum car.....& looks fantastic. I have it's RHD sister car 10 feet from me as I type this......

    Enjoy.

    Woodrim wheel.

PS- the '65 woodrim wheel is interesting in that it doesn't have the noticeable alloy spline that runs through the inner rim that mine and other very early cars do......

Was the alu / wood wheel not replaced for an iron / wood wheel somewhere in the MY65 production?

What surprises me more (as a possibly not correct accessory) is the rear window wiper. I thought that became available w/ the introduction of the 67S which was at least 6-9 months later.

Also what I personally not like in a museum car is the inconsistency like the KM gauge in an otherwise US car and the missing cigar lighter. Small details, easy to correct for the pictures.

It amazes me that nobody at the factory corrects these details. What the hell they are doing. And its a 50 year 911 publicity shot.
The key holder is wrong too...

There is no emergency flashers switch, wouldn't that denote a European spec car?

It has US turn signals front and back and Euro speedometer and headlights. And the trim ring on the horn button is worn down to the brass - it was delivered chromed. This car wouldn't be a contender in a U.S. concours.

I'm convinced that Porsche doesn't really care about the vintage cars. An acquaintance of mine had a private tour of the museum a while back and the vintage restoration shop. His observation was that shop was a complete mess, cluttered and dirty. Also, the person who conducted the tour (which I think was the museum director) knew less about the "correctness" of the old cars than he did.

I truly do admire the way Porsche has stayed true to their form in over the years. It's amazing that they're been able to do that and achieve such great commercial success.

adding to the "pile on" reproduction 128's (note the rivets on the outer edge).

also has a wrap around knee, making it very likely that this car is a 66. Another telltale sign is the knob on the shifter... if an early car, it should be a divot top mushroom style.

    where is the cig lighter?

The reason everything is "incorrect" on the early car is because it was purchased out of the US and then put through TUV for registration on German roads. Pretty typical, really...

As for the comments about Porsche not caring about the early cars, well, that's just not true. The reality is that the people who do the work at Porsche weren't born or were just born when these cars were new. The old-school craftsmen are either dead, retired, or have independent workshops ... if they were working on the line in 1965 then they would have been in their 20s or 30s which would mean they're what, 75-85 now?

I doubt they'll be brought in as consultants on correctness...
