Does anybody know when the factory changed the black to body color under the engine grill? 67 or sometime in the 68 MY. Chris

My mid-year '67 is black - I always thought it was a '66-'67 thing, but check this out; look at the last pic.

These guys were awfully correct on this semi-restoration - you might ask John Z about it. Maybe it was done by Porsche, but not by Karmann, cause it seems to be spotty, date-wise. This car is an early '68, judging by the engine grill.

My early 68 was resprayed but also has body color under the grill. In the other areas like hinges, etc it was painted correctly... So my thought is it was originally body color. The tongues wagging car is a much later 68. This question is a great one, that I too would like to know the answer. Experts like Jim A. here weigh in!

My 66 # 304014 was resprayed, so body color under the Grill. Should this be black?? if so does anyone have pic's w/o grill in place?
Which black is correct, is it sprayed or brushed and gloss, matt or flat

My '67 normal has original paint with no black under the grill. The '67S cars that I have seen do have the black paint under the grill. Maybe this helps.

I came to understand that it was correct for the area under the grille to be black when I was working on my '67 Sports Purpose build. It's frequently overlooked when cars are repainted but it's easy to remedy. I used satin black on mine and thought it looked good. John S. liked it - he awarded my car First in Class at the Carmel Concours on the Avenue a while back.
