. . . 1959 Porsche Convertible D, Matching Numbers, Great History, Same Family Ownership Last 46 Years, PCA Award Winner!
If you're in the market for a Convertible D, this car is positively one you must consider as you simply will not find one with a better and drier original body.
The car was bought brand new in 1959 by a Dr. Good of San Jose, California from a dealership in San Francisco. In 1967 he drove over something that bent the spindle, wheel, and fender in front of the wheel arch on the left front side. That year he sold it to the current owner's uncle who owned an automotive body shop. "Uncle Luke" brought the D back to his workshop, made the repairs, and drove the car until approximately 1972. At that time he disassembled the car and repainted it in a orange color. The car was never reassembled and sat safely and quietly for another 32 years until 2004 when he was diagnosed with cancer. At that time he passed the cherished family heirloom to his nephew with the wish that he would restore the car and take his father, Uncle Luke's brother, for a ride in it. He took great pride and honor in his assignment and spent the following years performing a top level, bare metal, complete head-to-toe restoration on the D. Being that the nephew was a recently-retired and more than 30 years experienced ASE and I CAR certified auto body technician, he was more than up for the task. By 2006 it was completed and attended its first Porsche Club Of America event where it made a strong impression and took the People's Choice award. In the handful of years since it has won numerous awards at PCA events including First In Class, has also entered PCA concours judged events where it scored an impressive 246.25 out of a possible 248 points, has been a feature car in the 356 Registry Magazine, was featured in another French Porsche specialty magazine, and has covered just over 1,000 miles.
Some of the other details to note include that it is an original California black plate car, it comes with pics of the car as it looked coming out of hibernation and prior to restoration, when it was completely bare metaled, comes with the Certificate Of Authenticity from Porsche confirming that it is matching numbers original engine and transaxle, the removable hardtop that has been with the car since new, as well as scans of the PCA concours score cards, scans of the feature articles, and the awards come with the car, too.
The body is a truly phenomenal survivor that miraculously never was rusted or saw any panel replacement. When you consider the fact that it was only on the road for 13 years from 1959-1972 and then spent the next 34 years in indoor dry storage and restoration, it is clearly conceivable that it is true. Great care was taken when the paint was removed to not harm the factory lead on the seams so that it could maintain the factory panel gaps and fit. The gorgeous original color of Ruby Red was confirmed by the body tag and COA and has been faithfully restored to a factory level finish. Heath Upholstery stitched up a beautiful canvas top and vinyl tonneau cover that compliment the upholstery nicely. The chrome and bright parts were all professionally replated, anodized, and polished accordingly by Global Plating and look incredible, too. The only piece that is not original to the car is the left upper door molding!
The interior is also first rate and was supplied by Autos International. The color is 911 Beige and features German square weave carpeting, original mats, restored original steering wheel, and the original gauges were all restored by Palo Alto Speedometer.
Mechanically the car has been completely restored with the original matching numbers 1600 S engine, original matching numbers 716/2 transaxle, new braking system, proper orange Koni shocks, and new Michelin radial tires, too. It has been driven just over 1,000 miles since completion and is still extremely clean inside, out, and underneath, too, as you can see by the extensive album of pics on my website.
You will be very hard pressed to find a nicer matching numbers Convertible D with a known and smile-inducing history and more impressive list of acknowledgements of quality from the Porsche collecting community. Thanks! . . .
