Presentation and a possible barn find advises

Since there is no « introduce yourself » section on this board, I will take the opportunity to do it in this post.
I’m 33, French, father of a 3rs old and mechanical engineer.

I love Porsches, and especially 60’s racers. I have a 906 replica project, and may show you some stuff if there is any interest (not much to show, but who knows?).

Another part of the story is that I have a major handicap. I don’t have enough money for such a passion. What I earn is barely sufficient to put a roof over my family, and put some food in the fridge.

So, how can one like me live such a passion? Well, I’m buying bit after bit parts for the 906. Of course, I can’t buy 906 tagged stuff, and here comes my ”talent’. I’m not that bad at discovering where all those tricky parts are coming from. Even if very few parts on the 906 are coming from a 911 and 356, some are, and some are coming from another cars, trucks and even helicopter (!) from that era. Buying 911 rear brake shoe is cheaper than buying a “Carrera 6 emergency brake system”, I’m also involved into parts reproductions projects, as lots of them are NLA unless you’re willing to part with an arm, a leg and half a kidney from specialized vendors. Last year I had special ball joints done, and I sold a few, making some profit in order to fund my project.

All this long story to tell you why I am on this board: I have bought some parts from members here. In the meantime, I began to learn a bit more about 911’s, and as one could suspect, my interest for the early cars has grown accordingly.
A few weeks ago, looking for an engine, I found a classified here in Europe for a 68 S engine. Asking price was fair, and I called.
So far, I have no tangible information, but, it looks like the guy has a 66 911S (yeas, I know S production was MY 67, but maybe a production date???) rusting somewhere. For personal reasons, he is willing to sell the car as parts since he lost the title, and as he told me, the car is supposed to have been modified, with later fenders, later bumpers… The car is supposed to have been stored 20 yrs ago, after the mods, and since then let for rust in a non-so weather tight storage.
I hope to have pictures of the car in the next weeks. And also maybe a price for the entire car.

Would anybody here advise me about what to look after to decide if the car is worth saving or not?

It’s a heartbreaker for me. As the car could be “affordable” and worth restoring it, but I probably won’t be able to purchase it for myself…
Anyway, all this story could turn as a “the 66s is nothing more than a 912 with a six in it, and a red fan shroud’, but hey! What di I really risk looking???

    Thanks for all the inputs.

    Olivier.

Hi. You risk nothing to have a look and take some pics. I think that once you see the actual conditions you can either decide to restore it to original conditions (be ready to invest a huge lot of money) or building a sport-purposes replica (which might be considerably less expensive then the previous option or much more depending on the level of details you want to achieve). I think that most depends on how much you can do yourself ... pieces are expensive, as you know, but hourly rates are even more. Good luck. Max

    Olivier,

On a "Barn Find" that has been sitting for some time, be prepared to spend money. On my '67 I needed to rebuild or replace everything that had something to do with how the car operated. For me, ground up, even shift rod bushings, things you don't even think about at first. So, like I said, be prepared to spend money.

That said, you'll get real enjoyment in bringing the car back to life, even if it takes some time!

Good luck and show us some photos.

    John

    Hello, Olivier . . .

    Here's a thread to show what can be done with a not-so-nice car . . .

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...-of-a-RHD-2.2S.

After seeing this? . . . I would say that any car can be saved

The question to ask yourself is . . . 'Is this something for me?'

    Enjoy your choices
