I think lots of the 1890s / early 1900s horseless carriages are mid engined... so that's probably not really the "first mid engined car" when the requirement is that the engine is behind the driver and in front of the rear axle
And I can think of about 30 other mid engined cars of the 1910s to 1930s, teh most famous perhaps being the Rumpler Tropfenwagen etc.

For fans of such oddities there is a new magazine https://rareandunique.media/ rare and unique vehicles - a true gem in today's car media mass.
Very well researched articles. I read it with readly https://readly.com/

    Monterey . . .

    . . . looks to be a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

Kindova brutish/cartoonish/silly beast --- but (your deity here), what a motor! OK-OK --- maybe an absolute horror to look at --- what with all the pipes + hoses + bracing + whatever scattered over everything . . . but a real riot to listen to. Even has a switchable neighbor-hater exhaust tract clamped onto 526 horses

Is this what things 've come to?

    Then/again --- what do I care? . . . passes emissions, yes?

Hell-yeah! --- + make mine orange, while you're at it

Just the thing to blatt around in --- 'till they take the gasoline away . . . and we all know that's coming

Not the most bashful shade, maybe --- but most come with all manner of stripes and black roofs to make any color other than black somewhat remarkable

Stupid car . . . but if they were juuuuuust a little cheaper?

    More Monterey . . .

    . . . Alpina C2 2.7

    Yeah-yeah --- four doors are kindova buzzkill . . . + I didn't see what gearbox --- but/still a super-rare car, here in the States. Not a big fan of that 'cow-catcher' spoiler, but I love those chrome bikini bumpers + side-markers . . . + clean, clean, clean

I swear this could be the same car W Carini had for sale at his F40 Motorsports, coupla years back

    More Monterey . . .

. . . in front of one of the auctions

    Southeby's, maybe?

    Whatever
    . . .

    . . . Meyers Manx --- in what looks like its OG-style metal-flake gel-coat finish

    !

Big ol' chrome headlights + offset gas-fill w/VW cap, itsy-bitsy bullet front turn lamps. Still has VW steering wheel + dash trim. VW steel wheels look right --- OGs were widened-up weld-ups w/ a funky offset + still had VW hubcaps. Looks like a pretty standard-but-mild dual-port VW motor --- but who knows? Notta lotta weight here so, depending on the gearing, these can be pretty quick . . . especially w/~1000 lbs to push around

Wish I had more garage space

    Pricey Little Beasties, now . . .

    . . . some recent comps . . .
