    Brake tool question

    Hi Gang,

I'm going to rebuild the calipers on my '71 T. Typical m cast iron with vented rotors.

The through bolts that hold the caliper halfs together seem to be a Torx T-30, But not quite. A T-30 is a little sloppy.

Is there a correct bit for this?

    Thanks for your help.

    Ted

Depends if you want nice tools or just a cheap tool to do the one job. OTOH you only need the M8 and M6 IIRC so you can buy nice ones and only be out the same amount of dough a cheap set might have cost.

I don't recommend the Stahlwille which I bought because they are too short. Snap-on sells them under the polydrive name. All the major tool manufacturers make these. Just get long ones, 100mm would be ideal on a half inch drive. Shorter ones will work but why make it hard on yourself? Oh, and don't drive the RIBE end, just use it for holding and spin the nut instead.

I believe I got my Ribe bits, by Hazet, at Spae-naur Inc. Andy is correct about using the bits to hold. I've broken enough of them over the past 25 years to verify that statement.

I may be in the minority, but I don't know why you need to separate the halves, there not being anything you're going to do which benefits from having the caliper in two pieces. Of course if you have a leak now, that's a different story. But there are enough tales of leaking hardware after separation to give me pause, if you don't have to do it.

Well, I split them so I could hone the caliper bores. I'm glad I did as there was some minor pitting.

I always split the halves, been doing it that way for more years than I'll mention, and Eric will cringe at this but I've never replaced the square section seals, never had a leaker either. Of course the next I do will,,,,,,,
