Thread: 73 RS (no charcoal or plastic evaporator tank)

73 RS (no charcoal or plastic evaporator tank)

I was checking out the fuel system to the rs as I am about to put a new plastic tank in. Before doing it, I wnated to make sure everything was in proper order.

I found that the car does not have the black charcoal cannister or the plastic evaporator tank found in the driver side front fender.

Is this how it should be?

    Thanks,

    John

As far as I know those were only installed in US-market 911 models - the '73 2.7RS didn't have them.

That's correct, only US spec cars had the charcoal tank and plastic canister. My Euro spec 73 has a plastic tank and has neither.

Hi, in case it helps we are building up a 73 car now which has a plastic tank. I have attached some pictures. We have also restored a few RSs which had plastic tanks (no US spec items fitted) and will have pics if that helps.

    Thanks

Is that brownish tube a vent hose? If so, where does it go? Under the gas flap? (My RS has A/C so it has the steel tank and the plastic (not charcoal) canister.)

Even the Euro cars without the fender collector and charcoal cannister had the black plastic vapor collector up under the dash.

I appreciate you guys jumping in! I thought it would have at least one or the other. So, how does it vent? I was about to change the tank out because I have a slight odor of gas. I have always heard these tanks start to "stink" a bit after a while, so I figured the gas odor was coming from the tank. I had my mechanic check everything out and he even took the pan off to check the pump and the connections. He gave it all a thumbs up.

Now I am wondering if the vapors are venting properly, or if something else is going on. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Hi, in case another pic helps. This is a 2.2S we restored. The brown pipe is the tank vent, both steel and plastic tank use the same system. This goes to a black plastic box (which collects the fumes) and it is literally an empty plastic box. Then another tube vents this down to the front of the trunk, during which the brake reservoir over flow pipe joins it via a specific T piece.

My Euro car has the vent hose from the black plastic cannister venting to the outside via a hole in the inner fender panel just above the fuse panel. The M/cyl vents through a rubber plug in the front bulkhead. I believe this to be correct,,,,but of course could be wrong!

    Alan/everyone:

Thanks for taking those pictures. This is how it is set up in my car. There is that little black box and the yellow vent tube. I have to check that I have the line coming out of the black box and that it is hooked up with the t connector to the brake over flow line.

This is very helpful. Thanks very much!
