In Indiana, you can get it converted to a clean title...

... but it's a long process involving notices, etc.

i don't think it is expensive. it's just tedious. i have to do one, myself, here shortly.

i don't know that this helped you, but it's what i'm being told.

Eric, my son just went through this with a motorcycle. It seemed like all he had to do was have the vin checked for whether it was stolen or not and get an appraisal so he could pay the correct amount of sales tax. There was some sort of fee up front and like a month waiting period too. I'll give him a call tonight to find out the process.

in NY state for early cars there was no title.
all you need is a bill of sale and a clear VIN search.
then you can register the car (but still won't get a title)

In CA all you need is a VIN verification and a bill of sale to get the title if the car is out of the system.

Went throught this in Oregon recently. Not a big deal. You aren't the first person the WA DMV has seen about a lost title. It amounts to paperwork, time, patience and $$.

Marco I think that you also need a DMV lost title form complete by the last titled owner. At least that's what I had to do. Exception would be a lien sale.

It's been my experience on far too many occasions that once it's out of the system a valid bill of sale is all that's needed, as there's no guarantee that the last titled owner is still alive or reachable.

Eric, I've sent you a PM. I hope you read it.

That looks interesting: I want to hear more... once the car is safely yours, of course!
