When the magnesium 911 boxes came out the FWM recommended that "Tectyl" be applied to it. This is in the supplement, they didn't specifically call it out for the aluminum 901 box.

    So I say 1970.

If the cars were shipped in the open on ships deck they used it. Many hard parts back to early 356 days were coated and wrapped in a wax type paper. It does not specifically answer your question but they used it a long time on cars and parts.

I wondering if a mag. fan from a '66 or '67 would have been coated?

The earliest car that I have seen it on was a 72 that I had. I have never seen it on the bottom of a SWB (the fan might be another story). I hope that narrows it down a bit.

My ’68 911 still has quite a bit of original Tectyl on (under) it.
My recollection is that ’67-’68 was the beginning of the ‘Tectyl program’.
Porsche still uses this same (or similar formula) Tectyl product on today’s 911s.
For an old street 911, I still ‘slather’ the stuff on everything under the 911.

It is available from a LA distributor, info posted on Pelican.

    Best,
    Grady

Can I have a clarification? Is Cosmoline both a specific product name (http://www.cosmolinedirect.com ) and general description of the properties of various products such as Tectyl 506 or 846?
