is there a gasket on the spacer for the pierburg dual pumps on Solex PI cars?

Does anyone know if the dual pierburg fuel pump for a Solex engine had gaskets in between the phenolic spacer. Mine currently has no gaskets, the last shop that worked on the car put gobs of sealer but it is the wrong sealer (Loctite 574) and oil is leaking out.

I am looking through my parts manuals and they show pumps, solex systems, chain covers but they show no mounting pump to chain cover so there is no place to show a gasket. It would have 2 gaskets if there should be any gaskets I would think, one for each side of the spacer. I would also wonder if this added distance affects the fuel pressure the mechanical pumps put out?

Any help from someone who has done one of these?

You are correct Mark, gasket thickness determines pump pressure. If you have the first version shop manual there is a section that explains the test and specifications.

Hi Ed, I have a June 1965 manual which covers the solex. I will dig through it tomorrow. Can you buy these gaskets or is it a make it yourself type? I just made 2 gaskets today and will try them when the car is started tomorrow. This car has rebuilt Solexes but there was a major fuel starvation issue once I got on the gas - high speeds or long hills the car would die as if it were out of fuel, when I pulled over the car kept running, pumped up the float bowls after a minute of idle and then it would take off again but never ran for more than a few short minutes under heavy load. Bendix pump and Pierburg pump both appear to put out sufficient volume. I am about to learn everything about these Solexes or die fiddling with them.

I think in this era you just buy various thicknesses of gasket paper and cut your own. There is a volume test as I mentioned, both in the shop manual and in the little spec books if you have the first version one (911 to 68) There was also a homemade tool for checking the level in the float bowls, just a manometer device. I made mine from a piece of bent copper tubing and some clear hose.

    Mark,

I don't think there are gaskets...I may be wrong, but I have never seen any.

Thanks Chris, I have that page in my manuals. Looks like the tools for testing the pressure and floats are just make it yourself stuff. The engine is back in the car and running so now it is a matter of tuning and testing. The manual says that if you pressure is too low then change the thickness of the gasket.

Also - chris_seven thank for the Nadella bearings they arrived today.

    Hello everyone!

I am working on installing my Pierburg pump. Which gasket thickness should I start with before making adjustments?

As I understand it, there should be two gaskets in addition to the Novotex piece.

    Thanks!
